Quick oil fill question
Posting here for more visibility.
Anyone here with a 2018 SS or SS 1LE change their oil and have to use more than 10 quarts to fill the pan? I had to use 11.5 quarts to bring it to the full mark on the dip stick. Nothing spilled, no drips, no leaks. Car was level and I checked it cold and after a quick drive after sitting for 15 minutes. Checked several times. No idea where all that oil went, but I'm a bit perplexed. I used two 5qt jugs of Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 M113A filter. Only thing I can think of is that the filter is higher capacity. It says right on the box that it is higher capacity, higher efficiency, but over a quart more? |

Did my fisrt oil change last week (945 miles) on my 18' 2 SS and filled with 10 quarts of Mobile 1. The dip stick reads full (oil covering the cross hatchs). Hope that helps.

Let it sit for awhile before you check the oil. It takes a long time for it to drain back down.

Mine takes 10qt. I use ACDelco PF64. I can't imagine the Mobil 1 filter would take more oil. It's the same size. I would stop at 10 qt. Let it sit for at least 45 mins to 1 hr to make sure all of the oil comes back down. At least it takes about that long for me to get all 10 qt drained out of the engine when changing the oil after the car has been running.

Manual says 10 quarts. Service manual says 10 quarts. LT1 has been 10 quarts in every application (e.g. Corvette or Camaro). Engine has been unchanged since its debut in 2014.
It’s 10 quarts. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

I learned a long time ago from several master techs....It doesn't matter what the capacity the engineers put in the manual. Why? Because no one including you, knows how much oil is left in the engine after you do a drain. I've seen situations where people leave a quart, leave a quart and a half, or get it all out. So here's what you have to do: If you know that the capacity is 10, with a filter change, put in 9.5 quarts and then start putting 2 ounces at a time until it is absolutely in the middle of the stick, Not at the top, not at the bottom, but the middle of the hashmarks. The bottom and top are extremes, there's no need to do that. Give the the engine a little room, so that on hills and in the rough situations you're not overflowing oil. Too much oil is worse than a low condition.
[edit- start with 9.5 total, this is after you measure that amount out and fill up the new oil filter for the screw on. ] Bottom line: Use the stick to tell you how much to put in, not some arbitrary number you start with.

I tend to agree with Glen, and most certainly would if I had done any modification that required the use of more oil (i.e. oil cooled turbocharger, additional oil scavenging pump or baffled oil pan) or an extremely rare vehicle.
With these cars, and how particular some GM dealers are about warranty work, I follow the recommended oil quantity and oil type in the manual. The reason being is if you ever find yourself in a situation where you’re having engine issues and GM, or another 3rd party warranty provider, is requesting proof of oil changes that you did yourself via a log you’ve kept, it’s much easier to get an approval for repair if the manual has been followed. While yes, you can certainly state the rationale for using 9.75qts and 9.85qts as opposed to the 10qts due to remaining oil not being drained, people in positions to approve or deny your claims are sometimes not as well versed as we are and will use that difference as a justification for denial. Keep it simple, take your time with the drain on a level surface and follow the manual. If you do so, the car will be just fine and you won’t get yourself into situations where you have to try to justify your deviations. Going back to the initial point though, 11qts seems a bit much and on the high side even with a filter change. OP, keep an eye on your oil levels. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
