The company that they work for. Since it is a state law that we cannot pump our own gas, the gas stations have to pay employees to pump gas. Maybe they don't raise the cost because the market wouldn't allow it (they would lose business). NJ also has one of the lowest gas tax rates in the nation.

Just filled the 2014 yesterday in NJ @ $1.67/gallon (regular). Funny, for the life of me I don't understand why we don't tip them. We tip the delivery guy $5, but the guy pumping gas for 8+ hours in the freezing gets nothing.

I'm sure it's because of the law since it's technically not an option although if you happen to have a nice car and stop at a decent gas station they usually just remind you and supervise you. I've only had an issue at WaWa with the vette where the guy was fighting for his life arguing he had to pump the gas. Probably a job security thing. The dude @ Shell is cool and understanding.

Back to the car. I've yet to fill mine, but will be going to the Shell station mentioned and will "supervise" the first fill up and if all is fine I'll just tell him not to top it off when I come by. Will definitely keep an eye on this. Thanks for the heads up.

Did the OP ever figure out if it was the car, pumps, etc???

Was having my gas pumped at shell the other day. Noticed when he was filling it kept stopping not even 3/4 way on the gauge. He asked me if its full, i looked and was like nope. He continued to pump but kept cutting off every few seconds till it was filled. This i never seen before in any car i have had before. I was thinking about this thread as he was filling it too lol

I drive a Jeep Wrangler and they've had this problem since the dawn of time and have never fixed it.

Don't get your hopes up. If it's doing it, it's probably always going to do it.

No, the fact that there is no need for a cap.

That's correct! I hate it. At least they hand me the nozzle when I am on my motorcycle.

That's so odd to me... Why aren't you allowed to fill your own gas?!

This is what happens when you fill with regular. Try premium.

It's the law, they don't have self service in NJ and one other state that I can't think of at the moment.

EDIT: Oregon
