Key Remote Missing the Top Section

When I purchased my 2016 Camaro used it came with both remotes except one is incomplete. It is missing the top portion- the part that is removable that is supposedly a key.The part that contains the loop so you can put the remote on a key ring.

When I went to GM Parts Direct it has two part numbers- one that is coded, one that is not. The coded one is not available.A blank (uncut) one is available.

How does this mini key work? Will the remote work without it installed or does it need to be coded and installed so the remote will work?If I buy it from GM Parts Direct, can the dealer code it so the remote will work? And does it also need to be cut so it works as a key?

The fob works without the key installed. The key is only for unlocking the doors in the event of a power failure (the cylinder is under the flip up cover that is the fixed back part of the door handle). The dealer should be able to hook you up with a cut key and the base it attaches to, for a price of course.

Thanks, I'll try the remote without the key. I can at least order the blank and have the dealer cut it for me. I have the other remote complete so hopefully they have everything they need...or perhaps they just go off of the VIN.

If you end up needing a new remote, the manual give instructions on how to program it.

You can look for a uncut key blank on Ebay. This one is under $5. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Replacement...edirect=mobile
You can probably find a local locksmith with the right machine to cut the key for $30 to $50. Probably a lot cheaper than a Chevy dealer.

Thanks for the tip. I ordered one already for 8.00. When it arrives I'll look into a local lock smith to cut it. Still better than replacing the entire remote, which works fine without the key in it. I initially thought you needed the key in it for the remote to work.
