The ZL1 1LE, ZL1 and 3 year old Z28 all beat the flagship track car 350R. Interesting.

Amazing numbers, faster than a 911 turbo. The C7 Grand Sport is pretty interesting being just a few tenths behind the expensive Porsche and without forced induction. It's amazing what a great set of tires can do.

Don't forget to factor in that VIR was repaved (really well) after last years LL. It had been repaved a couple years before that (really poorly, so bad that they sued the contractor). Unfortunately the 2015 & 2016 LL's suffered with a very poor track surface. This makes it very difficult to compare this years LL times with with cars in a previous year LL. Exactly how much this years better track surface benefitted the 2017 LL is hard to guess.

FYI regarding the tires used on the Porsche; "Helping to lop off big chunks of time are new tires, track-ready Porsche-spec Pirelli P Zero Corsas that bring increases in stick over the stock P Zeroes."

The 911 Turbo & ZL1 1LE were both from this year. Don't know if they both did hot laps on the same day in similar conditions ... but at least it was with the same track surface.

Yes and it's awesome the ZL1/1LE came out on top!

I have driven on the surface of VIR before repave, after repave 1, and after the repave/reseal 2. I wouldn't consider the differences to be "huge". It is nice now; however, there are areas of sealer & repair present in various areas. The run off areas at NASCAR bend, Oak Tree, etc. are definitely different and make tracking out a possibility. The weather conditions and track temp would have more bearing on the track times IMHO.

It was bad enough they sued the contractor over it. I agree even conditions within a day can contribute to very different outcomes.

With your experience at VIR, can you critique the line of the ZL1 1LE in their video? Seems like a lot of time was scrubbed hitting what seemed like a ridged curb at several points around the track.

The BRZ had a worse time this year, although they did mention the track was wet in a small area. It was previously tested in 2013 (I think) and changes to the car this year were minimal.

I think they said something about running water in areas losing them seconds. I don't think they or many were too concerned with the Subaru. Myself included.

It would seem logical that hitting these areas would be a slower way around VIR. In fact, using the curbing at VIR is necessary for a banzai hero lap. It is scary at first but you find that most of the uphill esses curbings and roller coaster into hog pen curbing have to be utilized to obtain the fastest lap times. Just don't use them if it is wet!
