tinted lights
hey all. I've read the Ontario highway traffic act and it doesn't say anything about rear lamps tinting. it only says headlights can not be covered or coloured.
does anyone know if it's illegal to put black smoked out tints on my camaro?

I had a body shop spray tint the the side markers and taillights on my Camaro and on my Silverado I have the GTS taillight covers. I have not had any problems as of yet. They both have been done for about three years

Most provinces don't have trouble with the sides and rear lights.
Been running these for a while in the prairies with no problems. |

I don't understand dark lights. Isn't that an oxy-moron?
I have been cut off, and almost hit people who dark out their lights. I don't understand why you would want to hide the fact that you're turning or stopping. |

I know it's illegal in Alberta but not sure about Ontario. I did it on all my previous vehicles but a buddy of mine got hit from behind (not his fault) and since his tail lights were tinted the people that hit him, blamed they couldn't see the tail lights and the insurance said it was a 50/50 fault because of the tinted light. For that reason I have stopped and decided it isn't worth it, plus all the annoying cops pulling me over for it and window tint

Want an official answer?
- Its at the officers discretion. What this means is your 'tinted' tail light, now provides virtually ANY policy officer in Ontario reasonable grounds to pull you over. This happens a lot, especially here in the Brampton area, the rice rockets will have super low cars, and thus the police now have reasonable grounds to pull the vehicle over as the wheels 'may rub' the fender thus PROVIDING reasonable grounds. On the topic of your tail lights or any light tinting for that matter its at the officers discretion to determine whether it is illegal or not. he could ' in theory ' pull you over and have you report to the MTO to have your vehicle evaluated as far as do the tints impede the necessary lumen's to make a tail light effective. When you modify your car and push it towards the 'illegal' or 'questionable' side of things then chances are what you're doing is wrong and it is only a matter of time But to summarize, lets use my car... 1.) no front license plate - illegal 2.) Cuts outs, gutted cats - illegal 3.) 10% tint all around - illegal 4.) Emissions Friendly? no - illegal --- How many times have I been ticketed? None --- Am I lucky? Yes You want my 0.02? Do what you want, we only live once. Just be responsible about how you drive and where you drive and chances are you'll be left alone.... The Bottom Line here folks is if you choose to modify your car in a manor that makes you ask a forum or others 'if it is legal' chances are it's not. Again that said, It's my car, It's my life, and I'll do what I damn well please until someone tells me otherwise. |

The law is Red lamp for the rear, Amber for the front. Regardless of part of Canada you live. If you got them smoked or darken and haven't had issue yet. it's not because it's legal, you just have not been caught yet.
