Just gotta vent about this coolant leak!!!

I've been chasing this disappearing coolant issue since I installed my JRE cam and GPI ported heads. I ordered the heads from GPI and they came damaged, clearly dropped and had worn valve guides. I shipped them back and they sent me another set. It's gradually gotten worse over time so I pulled them off and sent them to a machine shop to get checked and rebuilt. $2,500 later I put on these rebuilt GPI heads and low and behold it's still using coolant. Burning it in the #3 cylinder again. Well I took off the intake and wouldn't ya know it, there's coolant on top of the intake valve. The heads been ported too deep.

Frustrating to say the least, that the machine shop missed it, and that GPI would even send out stuff this bad. Whatever happened to quality control??

Now I have 1 good rebuilt ported head and 1 bad rebuilt ported head ... Ok, rant is over ...

That sucks… it’s crap like you’re going though that reinforces my will “not to mod”my car. I know a lot of people have good luck doing it, but I can’t help but think of how irritated I’d be in your shoes. Good luck…hope you get it straighten out once and for all.

Had the same thing happen with a set of TSP heads. The Gm castings suck.

Same. I bought my SS because it has the performance I want stock. After I get some track days in and become a better driver I know I’ll want more power/performance so I am already saving up for a Zl1. No longer interested in working out the kinks when it comes to modifying cars.

This type of stuff is why I only trust myself to work on my Camaro. I've done absolutely everything I could to it, but there's some things I can't do, like machine work and changing tires/alignment. No one cares more about your car than you do, and it's a pretty wide margin.

So, Throw a can of "BARS LEAKS" in it and relax. This stuff WILL seal it up!!!

It will also seal up the intake valve where the coolant is ending up - NOT a good idea.

Are you using a head gasket or just a beaded head sealant? The sealants made today allows you to totally forfeit a gasket.

Just the stock gaskets ... Seem to be working fine for me.

I can't see myself adding any sealant to the cooling system, especially not knowing the tolerances in the oil cooler. I'd rather not even chance it, and get this head fixed. Machine shop says they can weld it up, so we'll see how it goes.

It may not hold the valve completely shut, but it's meant to congeal in when it gets hot - and any additive that slows or in anyway inhibits the movement of the valves can be bad for the engine. Better to fix it correctly and/or replace the head entirely. I used Bars Leaks in my college days for pinhole radiator leaks on a ratty old beater that I paid a pittance for - replacing the rad would have cost more than the car did.

Personally I wouldn't use that type of product on any engine I plan on keeping.

This.

A sticky seat would not be on my list of good things to have.
