New crush washers for oil change?
Just a quick question. I'm going to be doing my first oil change soon, and I was checking on the parts needed, and I didn't see any mention of using a new crush washer on the drain plug. I've previously only had imported cars, and they always had you change the crush washer on the drain plug whenever you did an oil change, but I didn't see any mention of it here. Is this something that is needed, and if so, what is the correct size/part number to get?
Thanks in advance!

No crush washer.
The seal on the OEM drain plug is reusable. I've never replaced the seal on mine and still have no leak issues. --KG--

Thanks for the info! Any sort of maintenance/cleaning I should do on it before putting it back in?

I haven’t replaced it either and it works just fine. Wipe off the bolt, pan and call it done.

And on some cars (that require them) I've used brand new crush washers and still see small drips when I go back for the next oil change! And, yes, I wipe everything clean before I install and torque them. I also have some cars where I reuse the old crush washers and have no leaks/drips. From what I can tell, the aluminum ones work better than copper. |

Why did you put teflon tape on there?

I have always changed my oil , over 40 years. Have had cars that had a drip at plug and teflon tape stopped it. Easier , cheaper than new washers. Gives the plug a snug feel. Never had a leak or plug loosen when using it. Maybe good for the threads. Cheap insurance. I don't put tape on where threads will be inside pan.

I reckon tape is 1/4" ,3-8" wide I go no further from washer. It's always there when I take it out albeit oily and squished.

Why do you need a crush washer when the OEM plug has a proper rubber seal? I never had any leaks without a crush washer. Am I overlooking something?

I'm talking over 40 years of changing my oil. I started using Teflon tape on a Mazda 3 that would drip.I know gen6 has a permanent rubber washer.I started using the tape on the Mazda and never stopped using it. Kind of safety thing like safety wireing bolts.
