Enjoy 5,000 mile oil change guys! Keep throwing that money away like the oil industry wants you to! 5000 mile oil change idea with full synthetic and good filter is Absurdity to the MAX.
I appreciate what you are saying and am in the same 1% of forum members who change oil less often.

IMHO, any walk down the oil aisle shows "the oil industry" promoting LESS frequent changes. First it was 10,000 mile oil, now it's 15,000 miles. They also don't push the premium gas like they used to. The math on unnecessary purchase of high octane fuel used to add up to $1 billion annually in US alone. Probably hasn't come down much, but at least they don't push it like before.

It's not unnecessary per se, should help keep prices lower for us who actually do need it

This is click-bait nonsense. My undergrad degree is in chemistry and I have friends who are ChemE's, some in petroleum. The best first-line source for information on oils on the internet is bobistheoilguy. For the most part those guys are very serious and not trying to spew propaganda.
I’m a chemical engineer and worked for an oil additive company for several years back in the mid 2000s. Full synthetic easily lasts 10k miles for normal driving in terms of viscosity, lubrication and contaminates. Lot of cars such as the SS have large oil capacities which help dilute contaminates. The article in this thread is pure click bait. We ran various test engines 24/7/365 torture testing oils then tearing the engines apart to look for damage.

Back then mobile 1 and amsoil had the best testing statistics across the board. FWIW Shell gasoline also had the best additive packs for gasoline. My friends still in that field recommend filling with shell every 4 fill-ups at a minimum.

Engineering explained on youtube has a video how they torture test mobil 1 oils. They basically run them through an LS type v8 engine modified to include way more blow by contaminants than an actual engine, constantly for x number of hours and then test the oil. The idea is to simulate the worst possible scenario for fuel dilution and blow by. The problem is with some direct injection engines including my kia 2.4 is they produce heavy soot similar to a diesel engine. Soot is too small to be filtered out by the oil filter, and it has to be changed. Also city driving and hot and cold cycling can put more wear on the oil.
The GM Oil life monitor actually works pretty well and is much more than a dumb counter. I'd follow that.
