Placing an order with a dealer and allocations

Hey all I've been reading a lot but I'm still confused about this. How should this generally work? What are the normal steps? Should I go to the dealer and sign the papers for the order before they even have an "allocation"? Can they answer if they already have an allocation? How can they prove/confirm they got the allocation?

Hey 7Merlin, to the forums. Here's what I would do in your situation:

1. visit the dealership of your choice
2. engage in a bit of small talk
3. ask them if they have Camaro allocations
4. they will say they do (naturally)
5. place order with a deposit and (IMPORTANT) ask for the order workbench printout that includes your 6-letter order code (if they are dragging their feet about this, run)
6. ask our dealership employee members who kindly volunteered their time to check the status of your order (based on the order code) here at https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=606888
7. once the order status code becomes 2000 or 3xxx, you'll know the dealer did indeed have allocations and was willing to use one of them for your order—conversely, if the order status is still at status code 1100, that means the dealership has no allocation or isn't willing to use it for your car
8. if the order status remains at status code 1100 for a long time (you can ask again and again in the above thread), you may want to cancel the order and consider another dealer (some customers place orders with several dealers simultaneously to save time and to make sure they will actually end up with a Camaro)

In addition to the advice in the above post, sticky thread right at the top of this section has plenty of useful information about the whole process.

My suggestion is to get in contact with several dealers, try to find one that has an allocation or can guarantee an allocation. You have to watch for dealers adding market adjustment and various things like paint protection for $1,000 and what not. Be prepared to place a deposit on your order and ultimately that amount varies per dealer. I talked to 7-8 dealers before ordering my car, some had wait list, others wanted Market Adjustment, some could get your order in but had no idea when they’d get an allocation. I finally had found a dealer and when I asked about ordering a 1SS vs 2SS 1LE due to constraints he checked to see if they had any open allocations and he notified me that they had an open allocation for a 2SS 1LE (don’t know if allocations are that specific or not), ordered & deposit placed on 23rd, and accepted by Chevrolet by the 27th and at 3000 status currently.

I think they might be. When the dealer I ended up ordering from called me to let me know they had a couple of allocations coming in, it was on a Monday, but he said he wouldn't know if he could get me the exact spec I wanted until later in the week. He called me again that Friday to let me know they could get me the 2SS with the 1LE package, and I went down later that day and officially put in the order and left a deposit. When I spoke with my salesperson on Friday he did tell me that they only had the one allocation for what I wanted, and I believe the other one was for either a V6 model or a non-1LE SS. So I'm guessing the dealership allocations can get pretty specific.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

I'm assuming in this current situation an MSRP offer is fair and there's little chance I can get a below-MSRP deal. I have a couple at MSRP and and a few who wanted $5000 over MSRP.

I have a couple dealers ready to proceed with the order, but they're not saying they have an allocation.

How risky is it to put order with a couple dealers? Everyone says the deposit is refundable... so no harm working with multiple at the same time?

On the Dealer DOSP system(What the dealer uses for ordering from GM) left hand corner is where their Allocation number is indicated. Ask them to show it to you. There is a thread around #500 constraints that posted that show you what it looks like. If they won't or don't, then you might have a better idea whether they have one. Finally get an workbench order with everything written out on what you ordered and an order number with and signed off by you and dealer with OTP Out the door price.

You will have better luck by placing orders with different dealers and several people here did the same.
