Question Performance increase during 1st year of ownership?

I am wondering what people's experiences were over the first 1000, 3000, 5000 and 10,000 miles. What changes have you noticed regarding overall performance? When did you first feel like your Camaro was "fully broken in"?

Any change in performance would not be measureable. An engine will not make any more power at 5000 miles than it does at 500 or even 50.

that's kinda an open end question and mearly based on opinions. That said I broke mine in under Naturally Asperated, and around the 3000 mark, is when I boosted mine.

I doubt it would be measurable after the first 1000 miles. By that time everything is hopefully as broke in as it's going to get.

I've not experienced this in my car but I was present at both track days with my friends C7 Vette. He bought the car on a Monday, drove it back and forth to work for a week then we all headed up to WI for a couple of runs down the strip. The car had about 400 miles on it at that point and was running in the 12.50 range around 115 mph. I don't know the DA but I can tell you it was a mild day in the mid 60's.

He then took a road trip to the Corvette museum and back putting on about 1200 miles. The following weekend was back to the track. No changes to the car but it was in the 12.30's with mph in the 117 range on a hotter day so it defiantly loosened up a little over the first 1500 miles or so.

My thoughts on this are as such
1st the car might have an Ecu code written into the programming
To not perform at 100% to ease and " break in " the motor , maybe Al Oppenheimer can confirm or deny this ?

2nd is if you've ever assembled an engine , you'll know you have a compression ring a 2nd comp / tension ring and then an oil ring , as the engine puts on miles and the crosshatch and wear pattern develops the reduced friction from the cylinder walls will make an engine perform slightly better . Ring end gap , low tension rings ,etc. can all be contributing factors depending on your setup . But nearly ALL engines make more power after they are " broken IN " after a few dozen or hundred miles than when they are new .

3rd Sadly these engines are direct injection and as thousands of miles will develop carbon deposits on the valves . And these engines will slowly but surely make less and less power past 30,40 or even 50 thousand miles . These engines make the best power between 5000-30000 miles is my theory.

The reason I asked is, with my '17 Trax and its 1.4L turbo (LUJ), it was super boggy when I first got it. Like even well passed the break in period. I still noticed it around 3000 -5000 miles. Very slow off the line, took forever to accelerate to highway speeds. Now at 10k miles, there is a very noticeable difference in performance, at least to me. I feel it accelerates much quicker and gets to highway speeds faster. I haven't timed it or anything, but subjectively, it's much quicker and more responsive, I know for a fact.

I am wondering if anyone had these type of observations regarding the Camaro. Mine only has 600 miles on it so far, and I'm trying to gauge what kind of performance increases I might see. I don't really care about tenths of seconds or whatever, I'm just interested in subjective opinions.

All engines loosen up over time.

Anyone see improvement in gas mileage? Typically with me whatever the car gets out of the gate, it gets. Hoping my RS V6 will get better, I only get 21-24 and it has 2800 miles on it. My 85 Vette gets the same with a 5.7.

Yes to the MPG improvement. Absolutly. Especially with engines built over the last 15+ years. They are built much better with tighter tolorances. 2004 Yukon 4.7 did not break in until about 16K. constantly got 15-15.5 MPG, then, like a light switch, it achived 17-17.4 for the rest of its 167K life. Wifes 2006 SSR with 6.0LS2; 12 MPG for about the first 15K, then banged out 15.5 until it sold at 105K. My 2015 Silverado 5.3 the same story. Until I hit around 17-18K, I constantly received 16-17 MPG. I get 19.1-19.5 in mix, 24ish on highway -like clock work. The new Camaro, since it will go about 9K a year, is still a long way until we see MPG improvements as it is currently just over 1K.

I dont know about break in for performance, but a complete truth for MPG.

The difference in mileage and power is definitely measurable between 50 and 5000 miles

I noticed significant increases in power in the first year.

but 9lbs of boost will do that.

the vetts have a limiter on them that doesnt allow you to go full throttle until 500 miles or something like that.

HRFS much ? Kidding aside, I got 25-26 average, ~21 city and ~31 highway on the 2LT when I drove it like a grandma and 3-4 mpg less when pushing a bit harder.

(HRFS -> heavy right foot syndrome)
