5" intake tube installed

I replaced the stock 4" plastic with 5" polished aluminum. I will post the details of the parts to do this later, if anyone's interested. The LS3 definitely likes the big gulp of air. Slight increase in response noticed.

Does the 5" intake tube look cool, of course it does. Trust me, I am not trying to rain on your parade here or even try to convince you to buy our CAI, I am just offering some food for thought because I live and breathe this stuff for a living. One BIG problem that I am seeing is that you are going to be sucking hot air into the engine. The IAT is much more relevant to making power than the volume of air you are bringing in when it comes to what you have set-up N/A. If you want do have a DIY kit (although I dont reccoment it) I would at least consider doing a heat shield of some sort to block off some of that engine bay heat. Just something to consider.

Here are the part numbers, vendors and prices...

www.SFXPERFORMANCE.com
Spectre 5 Inch Mandrel 110deg Elbow With 6 Inch Leg - P/N: SPT96962 - $78
(But you might want to go with 120 degree bend - P/N: SPT96963)

Spectre Vacuum Sensor Adapter kit – P/N: SPT9712 - $8

www.EBAY.com
Ebay Store: Mandrel Bending Solutions
5" to 4" Gray 5 ply Silicone reducer coupler - Item #310371111356 - $30 for 2

www.HPS-SILCONEHOSES.com
HPS Stainless Steel T-Bolt Clamp 5.24" - 5.55" for 5" inch hose - SSTC-133-141 - $12 for 2
HPS Stainless Steel T-Bolt Clamp 4.26" - 4.57" for 4" inch hose - SSTC-108-116 - $12 for 2

ADVANCE AUTO PARTS
3/8” fuel line hose - $10
(2) 5/8” fuel line hose clamps - $4

Cut off 1” from short end of aluminum tube and 5.5” from the long end. Drill a ¾” hole for the grommet and adapter for the “valve cover-to-intake” hose. I cut down the bottom half of the factory airbox (keeping the cold air duct installed) to shield the filter from some of the heat and let cool air flow in. I do plan on fabbing up a heat shield. I will follow up with pics when that is complete.

Some follow up pics... As you can see, with the factory fresh air intake tube connected to the modified factory lower airbox, the filter gets cool air for the most part. It is shielded from header heat, and the massive 5" intake tube allows for a large volume of air to be readily available for when you stomp the throttle.

how are you getting more air? Can the 5" flow more that the stock restriction at the filter box or the opening restriction of the Throttle Body?

Intuitively, it seems to me, with the increaser then decreaser you have, you are going to lose air flow velocity and create turbulence which will mess you up.

A more normal sized/smaller tube will pressurize the intake air more allowing for a denser charge. Same reason a bigger exhaust is not better.

looks good man, just cause you didn't spend 400 bucks on an intake system doesn't mean it's not going to perform. i applaud you for your creativity, and i'll say it, an intakes an intake.

Yes the 5" tube will flow more air than the stock 4". Plus it will "contain" more air (volume). The tube I installed does not have chambers or the accordion style connector, thereby eliminating all the turbulence that the stock tube created. The silicone adapters I used are tapered so the airflow still remains smooth.

It is still there. The connector is rotated to the rear out of view of the pics. It is what the air filter is attached to.
