Random question regarding gas fill up while tanker truck is present.
What is your take on this theory/story/whatever:
I will not fill up my gas when I see a tanker truck refilling the tanks at the gas station. I will give it a day to settle in their tanks before I fill up. The idea that the gas filling the tank at the station would cause sediment to be stirred up which would then feed into my car from the pump. Is this a bogus thought? Is there any truth to it? The tanker trucks themselves have filters, the tanks/pumps at the station have filters, and the majority of stations now all use plastic lined tanks so the amount of sediment in the tanks would be minimal at best. A completely moronic thought process? |

A long time ago .... like 35 something years ago I purchased a brand new truck 100 miles from home. Drove it from the Dealer and about halfway pulled into a Gas station that had a tanker filling their tanks. I filled up my new truck with gas and got back on the road. 20 miles later my new truck started sputtering and was low on power! I was pissed thinking my new truck was junk and had blown up or something? Sputtered back to the Dealer told them the story and about filling it up. They brought back my clogged fuel filter and dumped sand/dirt out and said NEVER get fuel if a tanker is present. It will stir up any sediment in the tanks. So I would advise NO, do not fill up if a tanker is present. I learned my lesson a long time ago the hard way!

Fuel pumps ("dispensers") have filters.

Diesel definitely don't fill up , if tanker truck is filling the tank .
Gas I have been told by people in the industry, is ok if the tanks or station is relatively new , and many of you may remember, about 25 years ago , nation wide they replaced all the old metal tanks with poly tanks . So IMO , I have filled up with tanker truck present , with no issues, just been a few times .

their is water that settles at the bottom of the fuel storage tank, when they are filled the water ( condensation) is mixed with the fuel after a few hours it will settle to the bottom again. filter will not remove water. when I worked for a large trucking company we would dip and test and remove water from the tanks.

Be aware that most of the major players have fuel quality guarantees. I have personally dealt with the claims department at Wawa regarding a damaged fuel door hinge (in New Jersey we are not allowed to pump our own fuel), and they were exceptionally easy to deal with.

My dad told me 40 years ago not to fill it up when the tanker was there. Since I get Costco gas usually I get it when I can - don't have time to be returning later. Also, I figure there's got to be so much turnover that hopefully there's not much sediment anyway. No problems so far (knocks on wood).

I've always hear that and, I've always followed that. Whether there's any actual truth to it...?

Fact or fiction?
Who knows. I just don't see a need to risk it, so I don't |

The gas is filtered 3 times before it makes it into your car from the refinery. In any modern gas station there is a filter at the pump that filters it from their tank to your car. It shouldnt ever be an issue.
My only concern would be if you have heard a gas station has had gas problems in the past. We have one station near me that seems to get water in its gas every few months, so I just avoid that station always. If nobody has ever had any issues at a station, its likely to not be an issue there ever. That being said, just like me changing my oil at 500, 1500, and 5000 miles, it may not ever be useful enough to make a difference. But if you arent in a rush and can wait, it may make you feel better to go to a different station or come back the next day. Sometimes the peace of mind is more than worth it.

Never thought about it before and most if not all the time a tanker truck is not present when I put gas in my 3 vehicles.
