Very Strange Traffic Stop

I took an all day drive yesterday, as the whole family was out of town or busy. Coming down a long hill into Socorro, NM, my radar detector was indicating radar, so I drove at the speed limit (35).

A cop coming the other way flipped on his lights, whipped around, and pulled me over. He was friendly, but stated he had me at 48 in a 35. I told him there was no way, but I gave him my information and kept quiet.

He came back to the car and asked me how fast I had ever been in it. I told him I would not state such a thing while his body cam was right in my face, but I told him it could probably go about 195.

Then he asked if it could do a burn out, so I showed him a video of a nice burn out at a track I did. He then said if I did a burn out for him, he would only write me a warning today.

So I agreed, took the written warning, pulled carefully onto the street, and gave him what he wanted as I left.

Wow that’s almost unbelievable! Glad he didn’t ticket you and you just received a warning. I have found out a lot of law enforcement folks are gearheads too over the almost 50 years of my driving.

I'm pretty sure he just wanted to check out the car.

And, yes, it seem unbelievable, but it happened. I'm still processing it.

Thats why it's good to have a dash cam with a speed readout or to use the PDR (if you have it).

Still a very strange traffic stop.

I kid you not... Last weekend I had a sheriff SUV pull up next to me at a light. The officer driving and the his partner looked over, gave me a thumbs up and then "revved" their engine. I was in track mode, perfect timing! I revved my ZL1, they both gave me another thumbs up, smiled and that was that. I think in general law enforcement officers have positive attitudes toward us car guys/people. I think as long as your not being disrespectful or pushing the limit of the patience or blatantly breaking the street laws. What the OP mentions is weird but I'm glad it turned out ok!

Thats exactly what it was. It's not every day you get to see a ZL1 in person.

You sure that cop wasn’t Rod Serling, and you were in the Twilight Zone?

That's funny. I probably wouldn't get that lucky agin. I had two cops pull me over in my T/A many years ago, and he told me he wished I'd of run for it and he'd of enjoyed the chase. I didn't get a ticket though.

That's crazy!

I've been lucky for a long time now with local cops just leaving me alone. When I was in college I had a Saleen mustang clone that got a ton of attention. A cop stopped me to check it out. We talked for a bit and then he said something like, "well, I have to write you up for something, so I'm giving you a ticket for not having a front plate." I was like WTF man? Ever since I stopped driving mustangs, I've had no bad interactions with police. LOL

It happens. I had a Viper ACR, that I built and it was raucous. Making a left turn I saw the policeman eyeing me and sure enough he lit me up. He came over asked for my paperwork (lic, Reg and In’s.) Never even looked at them, then chatted me up for about ten minutes. Definitely plenty of car loving law enforcement out there!

You're the 1st person, other then myself, who I've ever heard got a written warning rather than just a verbal warning. I wonder if the written warning is "in the system" for whomever pulls you over the next time to see that you've gotten a break already.
