What aluminum shield are you talking about? You mean where the Vents are in the hood? I just don't think the 160 stat will help if its sitting in the staging lanes getting heat soaked. I did a 160 stat on my C7, wasn't impressed but maybe I'll try one again. However I'll wait till I've got the blower in hand and I can switch it out then. When I did street logs with the drag radials it wasn't pully any timing any where, none on the dyno either. I was dam close to 1.60s but not yesterday.
Its a plastic shield on the underside of the hood heat extractor vents. 5 ten millimeter nuts and its off, just put the nuts back on and tighten. How much water temp are you seeing? 210 degrees? I have a 180 stat and have the fans kick on at 190 and that drives the water temp down to 180 immediatly when sitting in the lanes. Take the hood insulation off also

I will take a look at those in the morning. Not sure why the hood insulator is a factor but I'm assuming its holding heat. Did you buy a GM 180? or Aftermarket

I’m using the katech 174 fwiw

What is making you go back to a pd?

Interested in the hood insulation also. I never took mine off. Why does gm put one there?

I don't know, maybe just wanna go a little faster again. I'll look at that Katech T-stat also. I looked at it this morning, guess I'm not seeing how it would help. Maybe I'm missing something. Would love to see an underneath pic of it.

I did remove the shield, takes a minute with my Kobalt 1/4" Ratchet, easy peasy. I can see where that would hold heat under the hood and not let it out. As far as the insulator it may be absorbing the heat and not letting it escape as it should. I'll remove it also and I'll get a Katech 174 as mention by 6spd. Thanks for your insight and hope it works.

GM does not make a 180 degree, has to be from the aftermarket. Regarding the hood insulation, it holds heat . After you remove the rain deflector, feel the heat coming up out of the extractor with the hood closed. Many little ways to let out heat helps imo. I used to remove the firewall w/strip on 2 different C7s I had. When I used to sit in traffic for one our big cruise nights by the time I got in and parked my wiper arms and blades were hot to touch because of all the heat the fans way up front were pushing out of that non sealed area now where the hood comes down and seals against the w/strip. This time of year I would also drain and keep at least 3/4 of the antifreeze, fill it with water and add a water wetter.

Oh I remember how hot my C7 would get, it would be 220 at the end of the track, it seemed to cool down quicker then the Camaro. I'll pull the hood insulator before I drive it again. Got have the windows tinted tomorrow and its going to be in the upper 90s so I'll see how it does. I've used the Water Wetter in the past, not sure it helps much, I've also used VPs. Thanks for the info.

The trick with water wetter or any cooling product it works much better with plain water, so remove at least 3/4 of the antifreeze mixture and fill with water. My C7s wouldnt even see 200 after a pass, would be high 180s at the most. You need to program the fans also to come on much earlier than the factory setting which is like 210 before the come on.

We did that on the 16 SS I had and ran them at a higher speed. The problem with removing that much Antifreeze is that I'll have to drain and replenish it for the winter. Gets cold in Missouri.

I hear ya, that is why I drain it and save it. Take out at least 1/2 the capacity of the cooling system. Gets mighty cold here in Connecticut also and my car is my daily driver. The petcock on the bottom of the right side of radiator is easy to get at and I usually reinstall the OE 194 stat at the same time.

Dam I thought Indy was late July or Early August for the SCT. Have fun, it should be a great show.

Here is an under hood shot that I took after removing the Hood insulator and rain guard at the hood heat extractor. I checked the heat coming out of the Vents in the hood and it was really rolling out of there, the hood insulator was surely keeping the heat trapped as stated in an earlier post. The rain guard was probably holding the heat in the way it was designed.

There ya go Laynlo, 1 small way to let some damn heat out. Put your hand over the vents with the hood closed and the fans are on... some serious movement of air going out the vents with out the rain guard on. I wished the rear hood w/strip on the firewall was just a clip on like the C7 corvettes. Just reaching down and pulling the hood release on the return road helps to , the hood stays popped on the safety latch no problem at those low return road speeds.
