Driving in the rain(tire question)
Hey guys, I have never driven my car in the rain and looks like I will be this Friday for a state inspection. The car has 800 miles on it, just wondering what to expect? Thanks in advance.

Absolutely nothing. It's a car, it is made to drive in the rain. Of course if you floor it without traction control, you will get wheel spin. Be easy on the throttle and all should be good.

Put the car in PTM wet mode, watch for puddles, and take it easy. The tires are prone to hydroplaning at highway speeds and good puddles. Local driving is fine, but acceleration traction is reduced and cornering is compromised compared to dry.

I'll second that these tires will hydroplane easily, heavy rain or puddles can be an issue.

I actually drive mine in snow and ice mode when it rains and I have to drive it. these tires being 305s with out much tread to begin with don't like standing water so just be careful and smart there has been a few times where I have felt uneasy and pulled over.

What this young man needs to know/learn is: There are "grooves" or tracks where normal driving occurs, or a lane if you will. This groove or lane is "depressed" and water will accumulate in the groove and puddle. Move your pony car over toward the yellow line to get out of this groove and up out of the hydroplane area of the road. Then you can maintain speed until heavy rain causes you to slow to 50-55 mph or stop if warranted.

I second everyone else saying the SC3's will hyrdoplane on you very very easily. Slow down, move over, avoid puddles and standing water. I've had a time I was doing 55 in the R hand lane on a 75 highway, and another time that I had to pull over, stop and contemplate turning around and taking it back home. That's highway speeds.
In town speeds I don't have much of a concern with these tires. Not sure how snow/ice mode will help you here. |

The simple truth is yes the stock tires are not ideal in the rain but they are perfectly safe in 99% of rainy conditions as long as the DRIVER acts appropriately! The only thing that is a real danger with the GYs is hydroplaning due to standing water, and as long as you are slowing down that won't happen unless it's really deep water, in which case you're probably screwed regardless of the tire. My point: the GYs are fine in the rain as long as you drive like it's raining!

Track day in the rain was no where near as bad as i suspected. Speeds were actually very good but the track i was at does not have deep depressions. Standing water is the problem.. ptm wet helps for sure. Slow down and you'll be fine.
