Work on the A/C = take the windshield out?!

My dad's been having problems with the A/C in his 2SS. He finally took it in last week and they said there's a leak in the condenser coil. To fix it the dealer had to not only pull the entire dashboard, but the windshield too. Seems like overkill to me.

Well, when they pulled it out they cracked it - had to order a new one.

Got the new one in, put it in, and were getting it washed and it started leaking. Strike 2

Got the 3rd one in today and there's an "imperfection". Having to order another one...again.

Who washes a newly installed windshield? Strike 12

Minimum 24 hr cure time before you think of doing anything to it- at least a week before any automated or "pressure" wash. That's just common sense.

BTW, I just had mine replaced yesterday at the dealer- rock chip that became an 8" long crack.

Being a glass tech, can you explain to me why they felt it necessary to "tape" the windshield on a car with indexing windows?

they taped the windshield to make sure that the windshield does not move around while the glue cures. i tape every windshield regardless if the car has stops for the windshield or not.

Thanks. I never considered the "moving around"; just the "pressure popping" when the doors are shut which shouldn't be an issue with indexing windows.

Sounds like they are clueless or BSing you. I seriously doubt GM engineered in having to remove the windshield on the car . My guess is they damaged it and told you that to cover it up.

The condenser wouldn't be under the dash. It would be out next to the radiator. I believe you mean they replaced the evaporator coil.

Actually it is true. The Aztek had the same issue until a GM tech figured out the bolt that was "too long" to clear the windshield could be cut off a little on the bottom before pulling it out. It would then clear the windshield and could be reused. Eventually it was fixed...Just an example of taking the lowest price for a bolt without thinking about the ramifications.

The bolt on the camaro may not be capable of being cut and if that is the case, it's out with the windshield and 99% of the time it will break. I'm sure there is a lucky one out there somewhere, so I won't go 100%, but with the glues these days they usually are going to break. Before the "bolt fix" on the Aztek, we always ordered a windshield when we set up an appointment.

Stupid question:

It was stated above about the cure time before washing or getting wet. How long do they wait in the factory between windshield install and water test ?

i'll take a guess.. they don't wash the car after it's built until it reaches the dealer and goes through pdi... at that time it's been more than 24 hours..
