SS 1LE vs 135i (tuned)
Have a co-worker who is convinced that his 09 BMW 135i would kill my 18 SS 1LE both in a straight line and on track.. Told him that's a funny joke. He then proceeded with saying his BMW has 500hp by a simple aftermarket tune and has a KW suspension. Guy really wants to race. I think it's kind of childish so I'm not sure if it's even worth the risk and time to do so. But I don't want to look like a wimp. What do you guys think I should do?

Don't think a 135i has an LSD. My 335i didn't and was also tuned with intake exhaust and intercooler. It made great power but it's useless if you can't get traction. It would one wheel peel all the time.

Cobb accessport tuning Cat delete 3 inch test pipes Upgraded charge pipe 7 inch intercooler Paddle shift K&N intake filters Exhaust And tuned on e85 Made 488 rwtq at 2800 rpm And like 440 rwhp at 6k or something. The car was a ROCKET ship off the line, however, the stock turbos the size of a krispy cream donut ran out of air in the top end. Quickly. Unless he has more mods than what i listed, he does not stand a chance in hell in either category. Fastest i ran was high 11s. |

Simple. If he’s tuned, then make sure yours is as well! I’d make sure my car was bringing it. If he beats you, you’ll never hear the end of it... so, make us proud!

You'd take him on a road course, but he'd likely win in a straight line. See the recent Road & Track comparo between the 2019 SS 1LE and the BMW M2. The M2 was 5 mph faster on the straight sections, but the 1LE had faster lap times by about 2 seconds - significant. BMW typically underreports power numbers, so his 135i probably makes similar power or maybe slightly more than the M2, but the chassis and suspension are 10 years behind, so it's highly unlikely he could beat your time on a road course. Only one way to find out.
It goes without saying - don't do it on the street.

He gained 200HP on a 300HP car with a simple aftermarket tune.
Lol, funny sh|t. Better to gift this guy a dyno run.

Ok, just to clarify.. He told me his mods are aftermarket tune, cold air intake, exhaust & headers, coilovers, racing clutch, and performance tires & wheels. I think the "500 horsepower" might be a lie. I don't know much about BMW's but that's a large power gain over simple mods.

Biggest issue with making over 500 hp on those motors were lack of fuel (HPFP not enough) and turbos are too small. He is full of shit and you should be able to rape him. It took me all those mods i listed above AND E85 to make 488 tq. I couldnt even get over 500hp.... |

One says "boosted" (thought all 135i's were) and the other is a Nurburgring map cutout which he's probably never been to lmao. Should've known the guy was full of himself. And "headers" were his words, not mine. |

Had a couple 335 loaners when 550 was in shop for oil changes. They are quick. Do run out of steam up top but that twin screw turbo has no lag. I will say the 335 diesel had far more torque...based on what you've shared my opinion is this person is FOS.
Listen to the car. Unless you can detect blowoff or pop off noise and such... Have him pop the hood. Be congratulatory. Nice. Wow.

there have been a few modded 135s around here. they rolled out on the highway. they’d easily drag a stock 1LE from 30-130. but road course? ha good luck in the beamer.

Turbo cars can be sneakily quick. Doesn’t take a ton of money to make power with an appropriate tune. I had a 335 with a tune. It’s not as fast or quick as an SS. However, had I gone with all the supporting mods I’d venture to say it’ll be as quick as an SS until I needed to turn.

That's the one thing I miss about my '09 335i. For about $1,200 in bolt on mods you could add about 130hp.
