Technically, all the options are $$$(+) and not $$$ --- $$$. So anyone and everyone earning could have chose the lowest option. I understand this is not how most would view and choose, however no one would be wrong for choosing the lowest number.

Having said that, I've met Mark Zuckerberg and have had conversations with him. I can honestly say that the media really puts a spin on him.

In reality, mistakes happen and when you listen to Mark he owns up to it and takes full responsibility, but no one has the intention of eavesdropping on your data. This is a side-effect/mistake that happens at all tech companies.

The real goal is **honestly** to improve your experience by understanding your use case. Data is stored to help steer algorithms to tailor to what we believe you'll like such as showing you posts that are similar to things you've shown an interest in the past. But the fact that some data is stored about you (even though a human being cannot see it) gets abused by the media and non-technical people get upset because they don't understand.

Ever wonder how you buy something or search for something on Amazon and now suddenly you see Ads for it all over Google? They are gathering data and sharing it with each other so that you see ads that are more likely to be something you're interested in. It's just data-in, data-out -- no one is looking at it but you, it is absolutely secure. Just like when you enter your credit card to purchase something online, data-in, data-out, no one sees it yet the world has become okay with that. So its hard for tech companies to know what data will make people angry and what wont.

The truth is that Mark is the most security-concerned guy I've met. How well that trickles down into the people writing the code isn't always 100% and thats where mistakes happen.

This could be a thread on its own so don't let me hijack -- but I know there's a lot of negativity. I would not work at Facebook if I did not believe in the goals.

It's just lucrative for media to stir the pot.

The sincere opinions of an honest engineer.
I get where you’re coming from. I hope you didn’t get the impression I was blaming you in any way, as you’re more or less along for the ride.

I don’t like the data thing, but I know every tech company does it. Google is probably the worst, but I feel the product they provide is worth it. My real issue with Facebook is the way it takes over people’s lives, and has been designed to suck people in and be as addictive as possible. I also don’t like that it’s become a primary news source for so many, yet isn’t held accountable. There is a whole lot of power in being able to choose what someone sees or doesn’t see.

For what it’s worth, I do have a FB account. Though I haven’t posted anything personal in probably 8 years, and rarely use the platform. I have used it a few times to find vintage BMX parts, so it’s not all bad. It’s a great tool to find things and people. I just don’t like what it’s become.

Sorry for derailing your thread. I added my vote to the poll.

Kinda curious what engineering jobs at FB pay 500k+ personally.

I'm a devops engineer in the bay but I'm not even making half of that and thought I was doing decently! Perhaps I should pop over for an interview, would be an easy commute and my sister works there.

I didn’t take offense, I just see what we’re really trying to do and believe in it even if the outside view is a bit tainted right now.

We don’t control what is seen and what isn’t, content providers do that, we’re just the forum.

Do you know how many people in third world countries that can’t even afford a phone now have the ability to communicate with the world because of FB (This is my job). These same people are now able to tell their stories which has lead poverty to have running water and food. I know this sounds like a sob story but it’s the truth every day.

A lot gets twisted about FB but we do so much good too.

We hear everyday about people with rare diseases that were able to find others like them and relate and help each other, share information and even save lives. We get millions of stories and thank-yous everyday day about how they’ve found lost relatives, lost pets and others.

I know what really goes on

Maybe I should have specified that I don’t like what it’s done to America. This isn’t based on rumor or media, but what I’ve personally seen happen. And this isn’t directed entirely at FB; really social media in general. I don’t think there’s necessarily bad intention, just that it’s generally not healthy for our country.

Of course there’s a good side. I’m not denying that.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming....

I agree with that.
The same was said about TV (It'll rot your brain) haha.
I think its a generation gap thing.
Every generation has its thing that separates it from the previous.
I think mine (I'm 40) was the personal computer and the internet.
I was an early adopter of both. My parents don't know how to turn a computer on.

I think social media is insane, but I do love the ease of sharing photos with family and friends and staying in touch.

However, every teenager saying they want to be a Youtuber when they grow up makes me sick.

Can you get my account back at FB ? I lost code and for some kind of reason the regular ways to get it back failed :(

And about FB … just free the nipple !! lmao

My story is that I retired at 44 (6 years ago)ex business owner, with enough money, bought my house cash 400K (cheap area ) my 2013 ZL1 vert cash (sold) and my 2019 ZL1 vert cash, that being said, if you don't got tons of loans/payments you don't have to make that much anymore.

I love the looks of the ZO6 but my height 6'4 and my 2 young boys (7 and 10) saved me the extra $25.000 + and being divorced I can bring a girl home even when I went out with one of me buddies and put her in the back seat )

Hmm, looks like either Facebook is insanely generous or glassdoor.com is seriously out of touch with reality these days, as it shows a peak of $300K for software engineering director and $220K for engineering VP at FB in San Francisco, and even contractor jobs max out at ~$300K. Hard to imagine a principal SW engineer would be valued at around twice these levels... or maybe, just maybe angryBits got some super special treatment
