He cares about the "signal" or little bit of electrical current the car emits or uses for the hotspot...

I will say it again, you are worrying about something that is so little that you are spending more energy on this than your car will use in his entire life for that thing.

Car hacking is mostly a real thing today. Would love to see it just go away or at least get rid of the annoying message every time I start the car.

I don’t understand your point of view. Why am I not able to disable it? It wouldn’t be anything if the app worked as intended, the GM site worked properly, or if the call center could assist. All state the hotspot isn’t on. Lol. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want to turn off what is essentially a router in my car.

This is interesting. I just canceled my data plan because I wasn't really using the hotspot. I then went and disabled it on my phone's app. It no longer connects to it, but I didn't check to see if it still "sees" it. I will have to check it tomorrow.

I just did this last night in my car, 18 1SS, setting in the infotainment that turns the wifi off? Didn't show up this morning when I fired it up to go to work.

car hacking is definitely a legitimate reason to not want an open (WPA or not secured) network access point attached to your car.

However, your disconnected wifi requires proximity and the car being on to exploit...so in reality, it's probably way less exploitable in this setup than any number of traditional methods to steal/jack/etc your car.

Even i'm not paranoid enough about security to put this in the bucket of "worth the effort to eliminate" ...though one day i may see what happens when the entire onstar/wifi module is fully removed.

I wish oem's would stop being tards and adopt a consumer centric approach to what rapidly becomes obsolete or requires updates for security. We could swap in new entertainment options as they rapidly replace old stuff and hook in our own networking either via tethering or plugging in our own routers. We had more choice and control in the 90's than we do now. It should be the other way around.

I can disable the "hotspot" in my onstar app. There you can set up the SSID enable/disable ect.. I just disabled it there.

Do you know if you have to pay to rename the WiFi? The previous owner of my car decided to rename the signal to “wifi *****” and I don’t know how to rename it.

You can change the password or SSID of the hot spot on the MyChevrolet app. That's the only place I could disable and enable the hot spot. My 2016 doesn't have WiFi option on the settings button on the actual radio/infotainment.

Well I checked this morning, and my phone does NOT see the hotspot at all. So I don't think it's a GM thing. I know several things changed in 2017 on the infotainment. For example, I don't have a WiFi option menu on the settings menu.

also just to be clear. SSID broadcasting is not the same as turning wifi off. You can still connect to a network if it's not broadcasting the SSID if you know it already. It just wont show up when "scanning". A real wifi signal analyzer would still show the channel as active if wifi is actually still enabled.

I dont know why chevy makes it so annoying to turn it off for real or why they think remote access is something the owner shouldn't control. But the fact that they do makes me want to turn it off even more.

I have a 2016 and the only way to turn it off is via the onstar app for me...which of course wont work if you've disabled onstar's telemetry radio. However i suspect that this is just a setting to disable ssid broadcasting. Either way though, it's less about real concerns and more about controlling your own property.
