Do you have some links or data to show otherwise ? I’m just not convinced a cage is any better at this level |

I added a 6 pt RPM with swing out door bars last winter, I'm not worried about side impact as much as roll over and I've been at plenty of races in my 50 years of drag racing that I've seen it happen. So to each his own, but I decided to go the safe route. You'll spend a couple grand for a bolt in chromoly and a weekend installing it. To me its worth every penny. I ran 10.30s@135+ mph and got shit from the tech guys every weekend at our NHRA track and after watching a 7 second twin turbo vet split the motor in the traps at over 180 mph with no cage I just figured its cheap safety. He got lucky and didn't hit anything after spinning a couple of times in his own oil.

That track got sued & lost, like always after someone gets killed the track mandated a roll bar & helmet for every car down their track. Even if it takes 20 seconds to go a 1/4 mile & how many people die everyday just driving on public roads at any speed fast or slow. The NHRA rule book is there for a reason. |

NHRA rulebook is not conceived with a street (full) car in mind. All NHRA safety requirements are "in lieu of" any other safety equipment -- meaning you don't run airbags with a cage.
Ask a legit cage maker if their cages are certified for soft and firm airbag clearances of your car. They will quickly and politely inform you that their products are only for closed course vehicles that are built for that purpose and that drag cars do not have airbags. That Camaro roll cage is intended for those that didn't get a COPO but want to build their own drag car using a body in white or convert a factory vehicle. Speaking of COPO -- no airbags in that entire interior (not even the steering wheel, because helmet hook). Any cage maker that markets their product to modern street cars and obstructs the airbags is leaving themselves open to legal action. Why do you not install a roll cage in a modern vehicle without removing/disabling airbags? Because of those firm clearances. The firm clearance of all 8 airbags in our car covers the area which the airbag will occupy throughout the inflation process. If an inflexible object is in the path of airbag deployment, it can cause a premature popping of the airbag. A person, even in full motion, is a soft clearance because the airbag can push it back and soft clearance is minimum distance vs inflation time for the occupant to avoid being injured by the interior pieces opening as the airbag pushes past them. What's inside an airbag? Sodium azide. If any of this chemical escapes the bag before the chemical inflation reaction is complete, then the unconverted sodium azide will burn your skin, your eyes and ulcerate your lung tissue. It is an extremely toxic substance. For what reasons would you not disable/remove airbags from a street car? First, it's a violation in many state to disable the factory safety equipment and remain road legal. Second, insurance companies will not write your policy if you mark no to factory airbags. Third, insurance companies will not pay and/or possibly charge you with fraud if you are found to have disabled or removed the factory safety equipment of a covered vehicle in the event of a loss. I'm not in either camp, and the above post is not preaching either side of this. What is important is keeping your mind open to all the financial and health risks associated with both ideas before making up your own mind. Don't void your insurance, don't get poisoned and do what you think is best for you. In a better world we would all have 3 Camaros and a leveled Silverado on 33's. One for the street. One for road courses. One for drag strips. And the Silverado to haul either one plus the tools and tires to keep you in the game. Ok, maybe we'd have a Tahoe RST for lugging the family around too. =) |
