SS 1LE diff in a 4cyl 1LE possible?
Anyone knows if the 3,73 gear or the entire diff from a SS 1LE can be swapped in a 4cyl 1LE to replace the 3.27 rear gear?
Are there any other options to swap a shorter rear ratio on the 4 cylinder? I suppose you can't swap a regular diff if the car came with the e-diff, the ecu might go crazy i suppose? thanks for any info |

No, it's an e-diff.
You may be able to buy different gears for it and simply install them in your current rear end. Well, it's not that simple but still less expensive vs a new rear end. One issue is the computer will need to be reprogrammed for it and this may effect your warranty.

do you know if the gears are available somewhere? Anyone ever done something like this? Don't realy mind about warranty, this is for a race car build.

OK i think i am confused, does the 4cyl 1LE package comes with the e-diff or not? It seems like it doesn't after all...

It does not. Think of the T4/V6 1LE as a SS (non 1LE) without the V8, with smaller brakes and less weight. NONE of the mechanical upgrades that are applied to the SS 1LE are applied to the T4/V6 1LE. No e-diff. No FE4 mag ride suspension. No PTM. No 2 piece rotors. No 6 piston calipers. No 20x10/11 wheel setup. etc

Not sure on availability, but if it's a race car it's likely you'll want a different LSD vs stock as well so you probably want to buy exactly the LSD and gearing that will be most ideal. I have installed gears, lockers and LSDs, it's possible to DIY if you're mechanically inclined and invest in the right tools. It's not a beginner project though. Tuning software can often completely compensate for different gearing, but I'm not familiar with Camaro options.

If you want to install a 3.73 rear end in your car, my suggestion would be the differential from a normal SS model (NOT the 1LE) with M6 trans. Those are not eLSD, so no big computer issues, other than the different ratio, which could be changed in the tune. The SS has a differential cooler so if your car does not, you'd need to plug those lines off on the SS diff.
There are no aftermarket gears available for the gen6 that I'm aware of, and swapping the whole center section with one of the few factory-built choices is the only modest-cost way to change. There is an aftermarket 9" center section available which would allow gear choices, but I think they cost about 5000 US dollars just for the center section, ouch. |
