I have used a California duster since 1997 on my cars, never once had any issues with scratching the paint as long as the duster is used correctly. I blow mine out with compressed air often and replace them every couple of years.

Is there no process for refreshing or renewing them?

You can hand wash / air dry but being as inexpensive as they are, I agree in replacing them every couple years.

You specifically cannot wash a treated mop like the Cali duster, its made to not be washed and does not need to be washed.
