That picture is derailing my plans to save for a house. as. I'm. writing. this. I have no idea why people spend 40k on a brand new bmw 3 series when they can have something something like this.

Both the salesman and general manager of the dealership are new and didnt even know it happened until GM opened up the 1st allocation for order early this week.

At first I was OK with waiting to possibly get a ZL1 in the next couple of months when the next allocation opened up, but today I called the sales guy back and told him to cancel my order.

I think it is time for me to take a step back and consider all of my options. Due to my respect for many of you at this site I decided to post this up just to say it has been fun and enjoyable discussing ZL1 topics over the past year.

Not saying that I wont end up with a ZL1 eventually, but for now I intend to look around a bit. First thing that caught my eye was this beauty which only has 4K miles on it and is $20K less than I was going to spend on the ZL1 with the planned mods I was having done. 600 beastly HP . . . What you think?

I appreciate the input from everyone. Wife didnt like the idea of me spending 68K on a 2008 car even though it only has 4K miles on it, LOL. I think she likes the Camaro (shoot, I like the Camaro). Soooo I went to Edmunds.com and sent out a request for a ZL1 that will go out to a half dozen dealers in the Houston area. Guess we will see what happens (not expecting much).

It's ironic really . . . Here I sit at 57 - Never owned a boat or muscle car all of these years. I always spent my money on houses, clothes, and family cars but now that I am in a position to afford a muscle car (and the wife approves <wink>), I am having all of this trouble getting one. I will probably still wait until after the first of the year and I have a chance to guesstimate my taxes because I made way too much money this year and dont have any write-offs to speak of. I thought you were supposed to work less when you are "retired", LOL!

I've tried to like the Viper but every time I set in one I find the driver's position a bit off center. You might notice it when you set in one. Also the pedals seems too close together.
Those 2 items ended my lust for a Viper.

I had a fellow car enthusiast at work tell me the same thing, although he said it didnt bother him. He pretty much stated what most of the folks here have already said. The Viper is unrefined raw power and lots of it if that is what you are after. You gotta admit, the car looks sweet!!

LOL first sales guy called on the ZL1. Had an allocation . . . No wonder he had one because the dealer is asking 5K over MSRP. Told him to take a hike.

I think it depends on how often you plan on driving the car. If you plan to daily drive the car, the ZL1 would be my choice. If you are looking for a weekend/toy car, the Viper is tempting.

the viper misses me for some reason. when I bought my z06 I could have bought one back in 09 but after driving an 06 viper and an 07 z06 the corvette just shined to me. More usable, less cramped sounded better, lighter, felt faster, etc. the only upside to the viper was less of them since they don't build them in volume. they didn't even make an 07 viper if I remember. I have never driven one of the 08 an up I am sure it is just a monster but that cars is probably just a handfull at all times.

The funny thing to me is how many vette owners are closet viper lovers. It baffels me they are too similar in price. If I liked the viper better it would be in my garage end of story.

Even right now if the impracticality of the viper is not a turn off and you just love a viper buy it. if not you will kick yourself. the viper is a faster car than a zl1 but I don't belive it is as well balanced but since they are not out there yet that remains to be seen.

I know it won't be as practical so you can't use it as much. vipers and vets have there times and places they can't be driven.

Vipers sound terrible, kinda like a six cylinder.

They have a poor image. People make fun of Viper owners whether you agree or not.

They are kind of Garish imho, kind of expect a guy to hop out who is wearing a silk shirt unbuttoned to his navel sporting a bunch of big gold chains tangled in his excessive chest hair, and wearing aviators.

Well gents, I both appreciate and respect all of your comments about the Viper, however the bottom line is . . . my wife of 35 years didnt take to the Viper at all. At this point, we could muse all day about which car I shoulda/woulda/coulda got, but since she likes the ZL1 and is even fine with me modding the crap out of it . . . so ZL1 it is my friends. Looks like I have one nailed down in Arkansas but wont be fully finalized until after Christmas. At this point I am taking the Sales Manager word, and even if it falls though there are several other allocations available if I need them.

you are actually hearing a 5 cylinder because two cyliders fire at the same time.
