i was thinking about just selling her my SW9VE, then myself upgrading to .45 ACP.

so...

best 9mm recommendation under $500
best 45acp recommendation under $500

prefer all black, or black/stainless steel
Glock.

Take her to a local gun store and let her hold them. Then see if you can rent one, or similar that she likes and let her heat it up. Go from there.

I'm REALLY liking my full size Rock Island 1911, it was under $500 and always goes bang when I pull the trigger

I hope you're wrong, you may be right. Local gun store was SLAMMED today with high cap gas gun orders today.

It's nice living on 70 acres outside the city limits...shoot whenever!
If that's a 12" target, not shabby at all ! All belly shots at 30 feet is plenty good.

Nice to have your own private shooting range

You will get many different answers to this question because everyone is different. What fits one person won't fit another.

Personally that would be the Springfield XD. I hate Glocks with a passion. They are so uncomfortable in your hand and due to the design of their grip, most people won't be accurate with them.

Your are very right. It is all about personal preference. The best thing to do is go to a range and shoot a variety of guns within your budget to see which one is best for you rather than relying on others opinions.....which may not do you any good.

I like glock. Although, I would probably never carry as a duty weapon. Most likely a Sig even though they are butt ugly.

Nice collection guys! Please note 2ndgenz28 the difference of a mag and a clip. You have a magazine, not a clip.

I may have to investigate the Springfield XD's...

Well, as we all know, the government is once again flailing their feminine arms about assault weapons, so they're going bye bye once again.

My question - I've always wanted to have an high capacity magazine weapon, whether it be an assault rifle or submachine gun, simply for variety, pleasure of shooting and home defense.

What is a better option - submachine gun, or assault rifle?

Also, I'm not looking to drop 2 grand on a damn gun - some people are enthusiasts and I can understand that, but I'd like to be able to scoop a nice assault rifle/SMG for under $800 or $1000. Any suggestions of brands/types/calibers to look into as well?

The two things you're asking for are almost mutually exclusive...

The rifle in my sig is $1100 retail. Most "assault" rifles will be right around $1,000 or more, not including whatever accessories you want to add.

Unless you look into going with a .22LR chambered firearm...
