Well it happened to me. Went to leave for a trip yesterday and there was literally no oil in the car when my husband checked it and it ended up needing 5.5 quarts.

This concerns me because I have read about people having this problem and their engines blowing up.

What should I do at this point?

It holds 6 quarts so ... Ouch

Was it making any noise, how was the engine temp? Change out that oil and look at it. The only place I know that test oil is. Insight. Located in Ohio.

No noise. No light. No change in temp or pressure. Nothing.

The Catch Can on my 10 SS LS3 captured 3-4oz every 500 miles, and GM said this was within allowable specs.
My 13 ZL1's CC has yet to catch even 1oz in 2500 miles.

I know you don't want to hear this, when you figure how much was in the pan, the oil galleries , draining back, you may have lost lubrication. I'm sitting here staring at my odometer at 165931 and it still runs unbelievable. Oil useage varies. It just used a half a quart in the last +2000 miles. It used a quart in way less than that in the previous 1500 or so miles.

I don't remember who it was (I think Can't-C-Me maybe?), but he reported a similar occurrence a year or more ago. Dipstick showed nothing, added oil, still nothing, added, etc. He drained the engine and out came nearly 12 qts. Hard to explain, but it appears to have happened, and where all that oil would go is a mystery. I can't find the thread(s), but there was a bit of buzz about the dipstick not indicating oil correctly. I have to say that if there were only half a quart in the car, there would have been some indication - low pressure warning, valve train noise, etc. I'd drain the car and start from zero.

If it were mine I'd have it towed to the dealership & let them check it. Better safe than sorry. Either too much or too little oil can be a problem. If you drive it I something bad happens and the dealership learns you were aware of a problem but drove it anyway they could question that and resist covering it. In light of the battle one member just had to wage just to get his covered under warranty, I'd play it safe. Even if you are out of warranty, play it safe with your baby. Keep us posted. This stuff really worries me.

What do the spark plugs look like? Notice any smoking of the exhaust?

Haven't checked the spark plugs yet.
No smoking in the exhaust.

I would do this, do an oil change and see how much comes out

Well that doesn't help me now bc I just added 5.5q because I had somewhere to be.
