Dissected: Updated AC Delco PF64 Oil Filter
For the Gen6 Camaros with the LT1/LT4. Some of this has been previously covered:
I cut apart the newer version of the AC Delco PF64 Oil Filter, GM part # 12696048. There is an older version of the PF64, part # 12640445, but it is going to be harder to find. Some people thought the older version was a better filter. Overall the newer PF64 looks OK, it does not have the paper/fiber end caps of some of the GM/AC Delco "E" core filters. It also has a bypass valve with a coil spring. The bypass valve set point is 22psi. GM states the proper filter with the correct bypass is critical for the Gen 6 Camaro V8s. But.... It is a touch shorter. It has a plastic inner retainer. Realistically, I see no problem running this filter. Some may want to run this to satisfy the warranty. Are there better filters? Certainly. Here's a couple pics I found online: GM TSB: 2012 - 2017 Corvette_ Service Bulletin_ #17-NA-157.pdf

Good info, Thanks for sharing!
What GM won't tell you is the reason for the bypass valve. ALL GDI engines experience many times the abrasive particulate matter shed from intake valves and contaminating the engine oil. The filters may clog to the point of restricting oil flow and turned bearings are the result. And this is not just the GM GDI engines, it is ALL GDI engines as this is an inherent problem along with the fuel dilution issues. Cheers! |

Thanks for posting this!
I didn't notice the part # change and I thought my new PF64 filters might be counterfeit due to the cheaper look and feel.

Good information here and as I suspected when looking at the newer "048" part.
This is why I quickly stocked up on the good old "445" - Seems to be built a lot sturdier overall. |

No direct data on this but good friend had a pin hole in the metal on one.
He has been chasing an oil leak for weeks on his truck. Problem is it was tightened serveral times so when he went to take it off it crush down so I doubt there is any way to diagnose it and I dont have the build date of the filter but by the paint it looks brand new. As far as the "bypass valve" in the oil filter...what automotive oil filter doesnt have this?

I’m using the K&N filter in my Vette LT1. Do I need to be scared?

I did my first oil change on my recently purchased '16 1SS. I used a Wix 57060XP filter that has a bypass PSI of 12. Should I be concerned with this???

I’m glad I came upon this topic.
I bought a K&N oil filter just to have an extra one on hand, and now that I’m looking at the K&N PSI relief valve rating, it’s rated between 11-17psi. ... I guess I’ll be returning it?
