2017 1LE, hurrican Irma and a generator
So I live in the Jacksonville area where we were impacted by Irma pretty severely with flooding and power outages. Our home lost power and we didn't have a generator so I went on the hunt. I don't have a vehicle capable of carrying a generator easily so I made the decision that having power was a bit more important than a few scratches on inside my car. We lived in an area where power was going to be out for many days due to flooding because they won't bring the trucks in until the water level goes down. 3-5 days typically, I went on a road trip. 120 miles later in GA I found a Lowes with a few left in stock. When we first tried to get the generator into the front seat we discovered it would not fit at all. So the store employee, car guy himself, came back with the proper tools to remove the front seat completely and we loaded the generator in without any harm. Got the generator home on Tuesday and we had power restored on Thursday, so yes, it was worth it and again no harm, scratches or wear on the car. Family safe.

My balcony is too close to windows, so I'm configuring a storm solar panel setup....more. Investigation needed ..all I need is lights and fans, AC is too much draw.

Hope things are sorted out for you (and everyone) soon.
Great story for the future, though. |

That unit had to cost a pretty penny. I had to do the same thing 13 years ago, but only across the bay to Tampa. All that was left was the big expensive units..... but I can power my whole house now.
My suggestion once things are back to normal is get an electrician to tap into the fuse box so you can plug directly into the box. Kill your main and then turn on just what you need, better than running multiple cords. You'll need a dedicated power cable for it also. |

Generator is on my list of things in the coming months to get for our house. I am part of the electric utility outage restoration so when I have to work that means the wife is stuck home alone until I get back.

Irma's a bitch! Maria too!
I overhauled my generator carb out in the wind and rain on my lanai. Gummy ho. House dark, no time left to move it inside. 4 hour window between power off and total food spoilage in fridge, freezer, and upright freezer. freezer is about 12 hrs Then live on cheerios for a week or more. Not gonna happen. Gasoline spilled in quantity. (outside) Brake cleaner spraying. Had to grab gen and duck behind when gusts hit. Kept carb side of gen opposite of gusts direction to minimize rain blowing into engine and carb. Never give up, never surrender. Thanks, Timmy. I actually screamed that out loud. Ran like new. (Our crops are saved!) Still got it baby. Last edited by camaro5; 09-18-2017 at 08:13 PM. |

Hey here's a crazy thought, maybe FPL could quit spending Millions on lobbyists to keep solar power out of the Sunshine State. G if we had solar panels we wouldn't even need you people anymore I wonder why you don't want solar power here. Human greed is once again killing us. Maybe clear the transmission lines of trees instead of letting them all tear down our whole electrical grid when the wind blows |
