Getting ready for cam install

I'm looking for some advice. Some of you may have read my thread about money shifting my car and severely bending a pushrod and having PTV contact.

I have since sent my heads to GPI for porting and a check up, as well as purchased a GPI cam kit with their SS3 cam.

I have a few questions regarding the install and first start on the cam.

1. Is assembly lube required/recommended for the cam or any other components?

2. What is the best way to prep BRAND NEW (unopened) Johnson 2110r lifters for install and use?

3. Is there any sort of break in process I need to be aware of for the first start? Special Oil, etc. (I know that on flat tappet stuff, you have to hold it at a certain rpm for while on the first start to let the lifters wear into the cam.)

4. Is it ok to do the first start untuned for the cam, or is that a no no?

5. Is it best to run fresh oil for first start, then change it again shortly after driving it a few miles?

I just pray that I install everything correctly, and don't have any leaks anywhere. One thing I am worried about is getting the injectors back in without damaging their seals. Has this been any kind of problem for anyone else?

Thanks, guys!

Congrats on taking the plunge... Having done this myself, I understand the mixture of excitement and terror!

1. YES, use liberally on ALL metal to metal contact points.
2. Clean, and soak in oil for 24hrs. That's what I did.
3. After the first start, and shake down run, you'll want to start tuning anyway, you will ring it out during that process.
4. 100% OK. Your car will correct itself enough to run.
5. I ran fresh oil, heavier weight Mobil 1, and changed it out after 500 miles for the standard supercar oil.

Not sure if my video / thread would help... PM me any questions, or I can give you my cell for any questions along the way.

Would Valvoline VR1 be a good oil for first start? Or is that not a good idea?

Also what is the best way to clean lifters?

I see no issues with the VR1... and I cleaned mine with some break cleaner and a link free cloth before soaking.

Does anyone have any tips on replacing the black lower seals on the injectors?
Do they need to be replaced (38k miles)?

Rockauto sells an injector seal replacement kit if you’re worried about them. Honestly as long as you don’t damage the seals, just clean them up. I lubricate injector O rings with just a little petroleum jelly. Not a fan of dry o rings.

That is not an O-ring. It’s a press seal. Anything designated as an O-ring looks a perfect donut. And pressed seal is not recommended to reuse.

Yeah I have new seals, but the install tool is very pricey and dealership wants to charge $300 to do it for me (even if i just brought the injectors to them). Was wondering if it was a necessity.

These LT motors are tough, but to be on the safe side I would use break in oil? Please let us know how you come along. Hope it goes good and wish you all the best!!

Now for two questions… I’m worried I’ve not got the cam timing right. So someone please tell me if my reasoning checks out.

In this image, you can see the timing dot on the crank sprocket is located just one and a half sections counter clockwise of the key. I define a section as a single raised or lowered section of the pump drive.

Here is what I’ve got. I think this is as close as i can get to having the timing arrow on the cam sprocket line up with where the dot SHOULD BE on the crankshaft.

I cannot see the dot because I can’t remove the oil pump as I don’t have the facilities to lift the engine.

2nd Question:

Does this lifter look okay (LITERALLY JUST UNBOXED JOHNSON 2110R. I can barely feel those short lines with my finger nail.

Upon further inspection, I found several more lifters in this condition. I also found one with a very small rust spot on the roller wheel. A few lifters even had rollers that would not spin more than 30 degrees each direction without being forced past that point. And not a single one of the new lifters spins nearly as smooth as my 40k mile stock lifters.

I have submitted an RMA request to Johnson. I am past the 90 day return policy BTR has, so I am not sure what I will do if Johnson denies and RMA.

Rust spot:
