NPP crackling and popping
I just love that sound but was wondering is that someone Chevy engineers caused to happen?
My friend says he hates it and that it sounds artificial. He prefers the exhaust noises from his 1969 Hemi Roadrunner. |

Gm changed the tune in 2019 to produce way more pops and crackles. They were fairly decent in 2016-2018 cars, meaning just 2-3 pops if you wanted to induce them, as opposed to several seconds of popping and crackling in 2019+ model years.
There is a thread here with the relevant table (minimum final spark) and the changes displayed in HP Tuners, in case you want to tune this back to the previous state. Needless to say, such changes will void the powertrain warranty, and no, Chevy service departments won't be willing to do this.

I like it. I had an SRT-4 modded to 375 HP with a 3” side dump exhaust. It was fun driving up to someone blocking the left lane on the Interstate. I’d floor it, left off as I approached them, and side by side it would sound like a 12 gauge went off. It would certainly snap them out of their stupor.

It's a side effect of direct injection, but Chevy tuned the car to accentuate it.

My 2013 frs never once popped or crackled bwfore or after tune and that's direct injection. So idk, if all di engines do that, could be wrong, just my experience

It's tuned in - they add gas on de-cel. There is a time limit on it too, so if it stops, you can tap the gas and get it going again.

For the most part I dislike these…it’s just over the top. Deep burbles = good… Loud gunshots = stupid. It sounds like the cat converters are going to disintegrate….
The biggest problem for me is if I want to pass someone or pull out quick without drama, it just can’t be done (sounds like you’re trying to make a statement). Why GM thought everyone would love this or not give the option of linking the increased pops and crackles to a driving mode / some other software, just makes no sense to me. I’d pay GM a couple hundred bucks to change it back to the way it was 2016-2018. |

NPP Crackling and Popping
Chutzpah - I agree with you. The loud popping and crackling sounds too much like a tuner exhaust on a four cylinder engine. I disliked it so much that I did a cat back exhaust swap which eliminated about ninety percent of the racket. I also find that if I change the engine sound to Stealth the tone is a little deeper with less crackle.

I love the crackles and pops. It seems to do it most in 2nd gear when I let off the gas. Perfect when I'm driving thru downtown areas.
