Cracked exhaust
So apparently the squeaking from my exhaust whenever the valves opened or closed is from a cracked exhaust. Anyone have any ideas why this would happen? They could not tell me. Maybe just got a bad one?

Where is it cracked? Mine cracked right before the second cat on the drivers side and was banging into the footwell under throttle. They replaced the whole system under warranty.

They did not specify. But when the NPP valves open or close there is a squeak. But only if the car is hot. But they're replacing it tomorrow and they're going to show me once they have the old exhaust off. But they said it's only one section of the exhaust.

It will more than likely be the NPP valves, it is a known issue with them to start making noise over time.

More than likely it was thermal expansion and contraction on a section of pipe that was stressed during forming.

It could just be bad from the factory. Defects do happen. My stock muffler was defective and rattled terribly from the inside on cold start up. It was probably in the baffles, bad or missing weld.

Not necessarily "bad". Weak? Yes.
Every time you turn the car on, the metal heats up. When it heats up, it expands. When you shut it off, it cools down and contracts. (That's the "ticking noise" you hear when you get out of the car). So, every cycle, it expands and contracts. You do the same thing when you bend a piece of sheet metal back and forth. After so many cycles it cracks and breaks. The metallurgy, the design, thermal expansion/contraction, and the thickness determine how many cycles the material can go thru before failure. Most exhaust systems last a long time. But, if you get a weak section of pipe, (not formed right, brittle, contaminated metal, etc.) it won't perform as designed and it prematurely fails. |
