Could I Chip Tune if I install Long Tube Headers (Catted)?

Hello everyone,

My stock cats burnt and I'm looking to install some long headers (catted) from Texas Speed and Performance, but I'm wondering if I could tune with a tuner instead of dyno tuning. Would it be sufficient? And would that pass emissions?

I'm conflicted if I should go with the catless because dyno tuning is a bit expensive. If there are cheaper but quality alternatives for long headers please let me know!

Best,

LL

You sure can. IMO, skip the TSP and go with a Stainless Power Header & SCT Tuner package from RDP and save some coin. Free tunes for life. I made 424hp with that combo and a CAI.

If you need emissions, go with cats. If not, dont.

I agree with him.. best bang for the buck is to bundle up your upgrades and get the tune right then.

If you have emissions you'll need cats to pass. As for a tuner, Dynosteve is a forum favorite for remote tunes, but you'll really not be hurting yourself at all with a dyno tune. Besides, with the dyno tune you get to brag about your numbers afterwards.

TSP headers are pretty decent for the money. We carry them with plenty of other options. As far as the tuning goes we'd recommend getting on someones dyno when you're ready. You can drive the car without a tune for a bit without hurting anything

You definitely should get a tune, but what do you have going on that you burned up the stock cats?

On a 2013, you should not have already had the stock ones go bad. You should look into some diagnostic stuff, because your fueling might be completely off right now.

TBH I have no idea, I went to a certified Chevy mechanic and he diagnosed it after I had a misfire. He started with the spark plugs and then after a few weeks I got a check engine light, then he checked the cats and said the passenger side was cat was burnt. Before he checked the cats he diagnosed the fueling and said it was fine and didn't run rich or lean. So he recommended long headers.

Thanks for the reply! I would definitely go with that, but I'm kinda short on the pricing.

Thanks for the feedback! Is it true you can tune with catless headers to pass emissions? I am from Colorado and some of my friends have done catless and said the altitude affects it enough to pass. IDK could be a myth, kinda new to this.

Definitely not a question for me. I would be inclined to say no way.

Yeah, you can shut off the rear oxygen sensor codes from tripping the CEL to pass, but if they do sniffer or visual tests, you will fail if you are supposed to have them.

But on all newer cars, shops mostly just hook up the OBD2 scanner and if you are in all ready states and not reporting codes you'll pass.

But I'm still concerned with your stock one going bad so quickly. I would replace the front oxygen sensors while you do headers.

Yes. Basic tune will do with the headers. Went with a custom Diablo tune at the time and I was satisfied. I recommend Pat G and autocal now! You could run the headers with no tune for some time without any harm. IIRC, sotck tune is on the rich side and Lts will lean it out a bit so youre good to go. I 'felt' 0 power gain from a tune, after headers install.
