5 Updates We’d Like To See From The Next Chevrolet Camaro

No, we’re not going to talk about the exterior design of the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro here. That topic has been discussed ad nauseam. We instead put our energy into more analytical aspects of the car that we would like to see from the Camaro in the future. You could say these suggestions expand off our previous article titled “How To Fix The Chevrolet Camaro” – and the aim is to increase the appeal of the car to a broader market while attempting to maintain core values that the Camaro represents. We find these core values to include accessible muscle car performance and a curb appeal that radiates Americana

1. Liftback Design
This suggestion is far less revolutionary than it appears. After all, multiple generations of the Chevrolet Camaro offered the functionality of a lift back, blending the line between a coupe and a more pedestrian hatchback. And even during the official drive event for the Camaro Turbo 1LE, the officials from Chevrolet repeatedly suggested that they hope to poach customers from the hot hatch market. The cold reality is that the sixth-generation Camaro offers a sliver of the functionality that interests hot hatch customers. A lift back could change this.

2. Small Block The Entire Engine Lineup
Picture these Chevrolet Camaro engine options if you will: 4.3L V6, 5.3L V8, 6.2L V8, supercharged 6.2L V8. We personally think that the 4.3L LV3 is a highly underutilized engine, especially for its power. With 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque coming from this naturally aspirated Small Block V6 engine, it has a lot of punch off the line and is minimally complex. Moreover, we think these baseline numbers could be improved in a Camaro application, as it’s likely not...More

Every 7th gen Camaro will have a DOHC engine, and the base engine will be a four-cylinder.

Aside from that, I would love to see the liftback design return. I think that, with the Corvette goes mid-engine and thus losing its own liftback trunk, the 7th gen has no excuse not to be a liftback. It’s more spacious, has a wider opening, and can improve both visibility and packaging if done right.

How about instead of DOHC, they just go straight camless?

1. A revised trunk opening and rearranging some stuff in the trunk (why is the battery on the right side behind a tiny opening making service difficult, again?) would help resolve some of this. If you want trunk space and practicality, buy a Challenger - and pay the penalty for the extra 500lbs that practically costs you.

2. No chance. Besides, who in their right mind wants a V8 doing the auto stop start thing so many people hate to save a questionable MPG or two? Attracting a younger crowd with a preference for tunable turbo 4s also becomes much tougher.

3. On an LS/LT, fine, make it an option - provided you don't need to radically redesign the chassis (at costs the rest of the lineup needs to eat) to get it done.

4. Agree to disagree. I like the tight, driver focused cockpit, and the vents (novel HVAC controls and all) always keep me comfortable (if you're hand is getting cold resting it on the shifter, put it back on the wheel. Like you're supposed to). The design seems special to me, although I'm not a fan of the new Blazer stealing so many elements from it, almost seems like it cheapens the Camaro's specialness, if only a bit.

5. Meh. I get trying to compete for bragging rights, but don't really care enough about the $80,000+ muscle car market to prioritize fighting that battle. I also don't think it'll really help with the more important sales war even if Chevy wins for a bit.

Lower beltline 1-2" or so, at least for the windshield and front of the front windows. Dry-sump the motor to get it lower down.

1. Get rid of the AFM.
2. Redesign the exhaust system for better free flow. No valves. (Add headers as an option)
3. Option to factory order a cam. (Gm Hot Cam & CNC Heads = SP376/535)
4. Clean up the engine bay.
5. It’s a track car, have option for factory roll bars to be able to install and uninstall. (Option for true harness race seats)

That would make me happy. But probably not the masses.

Having these would make a great option for a 2LE package.

 my dream

#6. Adding one more. Better jacking points with a pad to insert your floor jack. GM you can even make a floor jack for us garage monkeys that I would gladly buy from you if you design a specialty jack to insert in a spot that just clicks in. I am not a big fan of those jacking points with pinch welds.

I'm pretty sure that the A8 is fatally flawed. I say fatally because it can't be easily or cheaply fixed so GM... hasn't. GM could, but it would cost more than the flushes they currently employ to limp owners through the duration of their warranties.

Have not had one problem with my A8. Been to the drag strip many times, tranny has been tuned for firmer shifts. Every auto of Major car companies have their problems. Guess I got lucky with mine so far. Fingers crossed.

What about a fob that works all the time or a battery that doesn't go dead.
