Question Idle surging after cam install

So I recently cammed my 17 SS 1LE and have been noticing quite a few codes and issues my car has been having. But nonetheless the codes are all gone now as my tuner and I have been working endlessly on getting the car to 100%.

My tuner has done a cam install as well as much more on 2016 camaros before and has tuned my car the same as he has done those but for some reason my 2017 just isn’t liking it.

Just got the car back a day or so ago and at first the idle was spot on perfect at 850rpm, but now that I am driving it more, especially on cold starts it idles below it which is caused by some pretty decent surging. It goes and comes but I would say 90% of the time the idle is surging (meaning bouncing up and down). Obviously the car appears to need some more tuning done to take that away and we are working towards that but I’d like to go out my way to see if anyone of you all can provide me some help.

I am driving the car a lot more now to see if it just goes away eventually. But is that the case? Does the surging go away? Anyone else experience this? Would be GREATLY appreciated on any feedback in resolving this as it would 100% clean the idle up and make it sound as mean as it should be sounding. Anything I can send my tuners way that we can try will be very helpful.

I have a video or two after my cam install you all can hear if interested to see the issue, videos can be seen if searching MP3BOOSTED. Either way the car is just surging at idle and would like to clean that up.

The only advice you're going to get is to take it back to the tuner or find a new one. Check for vacuum leaks that's about all you can do.

Yeah I figured, we did check for any vacuum leaks and all is well

I originally had bucking and big time surges. I changed my cam sensor, and it helped a lot. I still had some surging but nothing like before. I ended changing my air intake, and the problem went away. Check you air intake for leaks and you might want to at least make sure your cam sensor is firmly pushed in if you don’t want to replace it.

I also installed a air fuel gage just to make sure I am at correct settings always. That was a big thing with myself. Not sure if this your problem but my surging disappeared after a few adjustments or it was the ECU that took that long to learn.

I have a 2016 and no problem surging now, my friend has a 2017 and sounds exactly what you have.

Maybe it throttle is letting in too much air at idle. Honestly I couldn't tell you with so little info. A good tuner could fix this such as EFI Tuning. Big big cams can idle rock solid at that rpm though so it's not too low of an rpm.

Can you please point me to where your purchased your new cam sensor, I’m also going to check my air intake. Really appreciate the feedback, I might just take it a part and clean it while I’m at it.

Yeah it’s true, I do stand by it being just a little to much air or some fine tuning adjustments needed. My dads GTO and brothers trans am are spot on with my tuner, they are the reason why I went to this guy, the owner / tuner also has a camaro ss as well as I searched around my area who has tuned a lot of 6 gen camaros and he was the only one so far has gotten very good feedback on them. So I shall see. I’m going to adjust the cold air intake a bit, clean it out while I’m at it and see if that does the trick.

One problem I have and understand it is fairly common in cammed M6 6gens, is that the rpm will drop below idle speed for a second or two before returning to idle speed when disengaging the transmission when stopping. I do not believe there is a fix yet for this problem, albeit an intermittent one.

Mine does that. And has just quit a few times.

Do you find it to be more of just an annoyance?

5 degrees of overlap should not be hard to tune, but the 2017-18 ECM are more finicky. Probably some anomaly in the tune that the tuner might of overlooked. Also it's not uncommon to make a tune change and whatever issue you have temporarily goes away all to return. Sometimes it can take upwards of 10 different tunes to get a cam car fully dialed in. I would take the car back and let tuner go back through it.

Yes. I believe there is something within HP Tuners that has yet to be unlocked before this small issue can be resolved.

its your tune take it back to the tuner. its common. I forget what needs to be changed. I had the same problem and tuner fixed it no problem on my cammed 5th gen.
