BMW M5 vs SS 1LE

I was on I-395 in CT today about 6:30 pm, right lane, cruise control set at 70 in a 65 limit zone. Moderate traffic. I could see a sporty looking BMW coming up quick in the left lane. When he got next to me, he slowed down to my pace. I didn't even really look over, but I could see he was doing quick acceleration bursts and then letting off, so it was obvious he was challenging me.

I don't do street racing, though, so I just stayed on the cruise control. After half a minute or so, he got the message and showed me by flooring it and then weaving around a couple cars in front of us. I saw the M5 badge on the trunk lid when he went by.

Let's say I had downshifted to 3rd gear and took him up on the challenge - who would win in a rolling start from 70 mph?

I don't know the exact year of the M5, but it looked new-ish. Looked and sounded stock but not sure.

Good thing I didn't take the bait. Would have gotten blown away, and could have lost my license for racing to rub salt in the wound.

Yeah, just looked it up. 2018 M5 is 592 horsepower. Motor Trend did the 1/4 mile in 11.1 @ 126 mph in it. Badass looking car when it went by me.

I believe I saw Car and Driver had an M5 Competition and it was making the 617 advertised horsepower at the wheels. Those cars are monsters and underrated.

Yeah those M5s are very heavy but are crazy fast and can put the power down well!

Full bolt on might get you within a car and maybe better from a roll

Never going to happen, not in a roll race, the M5 will take down even an A10 ZL1 it is nasty.

Well I'm not soo sure it'll beat an A10 ZL1 on a roll. That AWD and weight will have an impact once things get rolling. I think a ZL1 will slightly edge it out. But it'll walk anything less for sure. A SS wouldn't stand a chance stock for stock. Probably not even with FBO.

If an m5 is rated at 600hp, it makes 700

It traps about the same as a zl1

That’s why I’m saying a fbo SS will be close enough. Ported high ram.

Don't race any Mercedes Benz E63s either. I test drove a 2018 with 6400 miles the day before I bought my Camaro. That car was crazy fast, beautiful to look at and handled well.

I decided to drive my truck when I need four seats and buy a sports car. That's all those super fast euro barges are good for... racing people on the highway that don't know what an M5 or an E63 is. OH and losing 50% of it's value in three years. Check out the lease payment VS monthly with 20% down.

Slightly different car, but I had the pleasure of beating up on an Audi s8 which comes in at 605hp but weighs in excess of 4600 lbs. Note that I’m also supercharged at around 580whp

Any m5 after the e39 will take the 1le in the conditions the OP describes. The the latest m5 comp pack was clocked at 2.9 sec 0-60 by C&D. Vastly misleading power numbers from the factory...my next family mobile in 2 years when they reach 50k off msrp
