A8 exploded

Freshly rebuilt A8 by a very well known rebuilder. First track pass and it blew up in the burnout box, before the first pass. Whats everyone’s take on this? Defective rebuild or race car parts break?

Popped the airbags and caught the car on fire too

You know toohighpsi commented on your unfortunate event and said "Unfortunately the newfound power was a bit too much for the drive-train and failed the rear and trans before completing a pass. The rear locked up - split the transmission completely in half - and caught fire at the starting line setting off side airbags before it could be contained. "

with that being said it's hard to believe that a trans rebuild had anything to do with the failure.

reminds me alot of the carnage that happened to parish8 back in april of 18.

That's some serious damage... Since it has been rebuilt I would call it as a defective rebuilt... Plenty of guys are racing their Camaro and none have broke that way.

Initially we believed the rear end locked up. However what we were fighting was the e brakes that were locked and due to the fire and electrical failure they would not unlock.

I’ll have to chat with parish8 about his maybe the failures are related.

That is a bummer. Back when mine blew up we blamed it on me letting it shift during the burnout. It did get away from me and go 1-2-3-4-5-4-5-boom all in about 2 seconds. That seemed like a reasonable assumption considering it has internal mods and tuning changes.

It didn’t sound like you let yours rip through the shifts...

I now have a 3step(rev limiter just for the burn out) and it really makes the burn outs smooth and controlled. I am a little concerned about mine but to be fair I am pushing the entire driveline and anything could let go. rohosnyper has these trans mods and has a ton of runs I am told.

to answer your question I think it is both. Something in the build is off AND shit breaks when you race. Packing extra clutches, turning up pressures, changing shift times... trying to get a mildly modded trans into the 8’s. It is all very complex.

I can tell you after seeing a 2nd one go I will be getting a trans blanket. I have always kept more than one fire extinguisher handy.

A little duct tape will fix that. All A8s should be blown up.

That sucks man. Braking bits is the worst.

Side question: why build the 8spd? Dropping a built 4l80 seems like a better/cheaper/tried and true option.

4l80 wouldn't be much if any cheaper to handle the power you are making. Your looking at 4600.00 for a 1000hp unit with no options or converter and 5400.00 for a 1500hp unit.

You can't really "drop in" another trans in these cars. It's not as easy as the older cars, everything is integrated between the ECM and TCM. You take one out of the loop and most of the cars functions don't work.

Exactly the battle I’m fighting right now. Certainly will be faster but at what price for functionality. Magnuson has their TH400 car working pretty well and I’m sure it’s only going to get better.

Not THAT hard.... Flash manual trans tune to ECM and run 4l80 with standalone controller. Or go full aftermarket with Holley Dominator. It just seems like an awfully complex trans with a whole lot of unneeded gears to be trying to racecar
