Perfect platform for a TT kit. With the supplemental fuel rails, fuel is not the limiting factor. And with the right parts he's driving an ~800-1000hp car. Quote:

Stock vs stock or was your A8 tuned?

I'm curious to know if the A10 has the lovely, buck/unnecessarily hard low throttle shifts and clunky coasting downshifts. Especially the coasting 4-3 downshift where the clutch timing is so mistimed the whole drivetrain reverses torque and clanks and clunks because there is so much slop and backslash in the driveshaft and rear end. Also I wonder how loud it is when shifting from reverse to drive to park? does it clank and clunk like the A8s?

The only thing my A8 does is shift fairly hard on the initial 1-2 after a cold start. I am sure that by setting my converter to not lock until 8th gear @ 55mph on part throttle shifts helps a bunch with some of the stuff you describe...it really smoothed out the transmission.

It's partly my fault for not logging it when it happeneds. I am wondering how they get the slight engine brake feeling while coasting to a stop, and I guess it is by slipping the torque converter on and off, but you can barely see the RPMs change? Anyway I need to log it and look at the tables to know for sure, problem is I have a 2017 so I can't tune the TCM and can't really afford to not drive for a week while I ship the TCM off, I'm sure an opportunity will come up though.
I think given the limited amount of pressure solenoids and transducers and feedback mechanisms these clutch to clutch transmissions have, it's probably not practical to expect a perfect shift with zero overlap, but I think you may be onto something that the backlash and clunk is being unnecessarily amplified with the TC locked. I know there would be viscous friction when the output drives the input, but I don't think the stator would act the same way in reverse. |

That and my torque converter is set to not lock part throttle cruising until 8th gear above 55mph. You lose some gas mileage but the trans acts sooo much smoother. Once you turn off afm, 0 out slip tables, and change lock up setting, the A8 is a dream to drive...

How do you have those lock up tables setup? Do you pretty much just put 318 everywhere except 8th? I'm new to all this tuning stuff so i'm trying to learn what does what haha.

I'd like to know too...
Right now my A8 shifts great when WOT or driving like a granny. If I go from a dig 1/2-3/4 throttle, my tranny will buck 3-4-5. it feels like it slips, then grabs, then slips then grabs. it just doesn't like shifting between 3-5k.

Here is a screen shot of my TCC Apply/Release for Speed... set for all Patterns and Hot. I don't mess with Full Throttle lockup.

You might try a fast learn reset with HPT VCM controls. You have to have engine running in gear, when you hit reset you will lose all gears. Put trans back in park and Shut the engine off...wait 2-3 minutes for all controllers to turn off. Then start up and go out and drive it. It will shift like crap for a bit then start learning and smooth out.

I'll give those settings a try. Is there anything negative about keeping it unlocked most of the time besides MPG?

Nope...this is how I have tuned all my GM automatic transmissions in the past. They only lock the converter in the lower gears to improve gas mileage. You will notice that its more responsive as the rpms will increase easier at tip in throttle which will also give a little more exhaust note. You can play around with different speeds you want the converter to lock. I like 55-60mph the best.
