I think the first few years will be successful with the hype of a pro sports team coming to the city. And I can understand your want to have one being that you live there. But the sport has to relate to the average Joe and have a good base at the grassroots level. Let's say for some reason basketball courts couldn't be cheaply constructed in Canada. No at home nets, no portable nets and no courts at school. There would be far less people interested in the game. Well in Vegas you can't make ice outside which limits the game to an arena. Maybe you're a big NHL fan. That's great. But there are a lot more NHL fans being ignored with this decision. Quebec also has a new professional arena built. |

As for making money, I really don't know, no one does, as there has never been a professional team here. But sometimes, you have to start somewhere. I'm sure a team in Quebec would have done great, but for some reason, they chose Vegas. And like you said, they are all billionaires for a reason. And no, I'm not a huge NHL fan. At least not since the 90's. Paul Koriya and Eric Lindros were my favorite during that time. With a new team here, I very well may get back into hockey. Plus, who wouldn't want to get out of the heat once in a while? lol

I think Vegas will do great, especially since they are the only Pro Sports team in town. You don't need the grassroots or outside Ice to be successful. Tampa is a good example - there was no Hockey fervor before the Lightning came here. No outside rinks, no leagues for kids, etc. Even after going through some bad ownership through the years, the team is successful. And now the grassroots are spreading - there are 5 Rinks in the area with another being built. There is also Street Hockey. As far as making money, a lot of Sports Franchises do not make money (especially in Hockey). It's all about Ego! |

So I guess it's now official. NHL in Las Vegas. I don't think there's a name for the team yet. I like Las Vegas Aces.

Yah obviously the ability to make ice outside is not a prerequisite to getting an NHL franchise. However the teams that struggle to fill the seats are located in the southern US. Carolina, Arizona and the Florida Panthers are a good example. Perhaps one too many teams in Florida. Why not move one of these teams up North.
With the NHL expanding instead of relocating it looks as though there will be another team to come bringing the total to 32 NHL teams... maybe. Is there enough talent to fill the rosters of one or two more teams? Or does the product get watered down. I watched game 7 of the NBA finals and thought it was funny that David Silver, commissioner of the NBA, also gets booed when handing out the trophy. |

The only thing going for Vegas is that you have a lot of NE transplants, people from Boston, NY, Philly etc. I hope the team does for as a hockey fan...we don't need another bottom feeder garbage team...we have enough of them already in our sport.
I can't wait for the '16-17 season to start, going through withdraw already. Oh yeah PS...**** the Pens.

I can't see how the Vegas team won't be garbage for the first few years. This is to be expected though as it takes time to build a team from scratch. They'll need to put a quality product on the ice by the 5th season, in my estimate, to keep interest.
People from the New England states do seem to be some pretty hard core sports fans for sure. |

I disagree, in the expansion Draft, they will end up with a Good Goaltender or two, which I think is key. They won't get a Superstar Scorer, but they could be competitive. I would think they would be active in Free Agency.

I remember when the Lightning came into the League, they got Scrubs in the Expansion & No Goalie ( Heck, we had a Woman Goalie - Rheaume's movie should be coming out soon), but we won our 1st game out of the gate and were surprisingly competitive

Tampa has done an excellent job of being competitive and bringing in fans, especially considering it's not a traditional hockey market. I was really hoping Stamkos would have signed in Montreal.
However Tampa is the exception and not the rule. I still think Vegas will be hurting to bring people to the rink after the novelty wears off. |

I don't really see how a new NHL team in Vegas would be a novelty. People either like hockey or they don't. I think if it fails, it will fail from the start. But I don't think it will. People don't realize how many people live in clark county.
