Oil pump failure 😞

Had oil pump failure today at 12,898 miles. Car is an 18 built in aug 2017 in normal city traffic driving. My question is, how many of you had this failure and had the oil pump replaced with out any damage to the engine. Metal is my concern and I will know a lot more in next week or so but on the off chance the dealership only wants to replace oil pump, is that the smartest thing. Does a oil pump going down always require a new engine? I’d love to hear your experiences with this issue and what the dealership did for you? Car was only driven about a 1/10 of a mile after the failure

Second question, does the newer GM pumps fix the issue. My dealership does not want to authorize a katech pump in place of OEM under warranty…

Yes I know but reading through it didn’t answer some of the questions I had above. Everyone talks about the failures but not so much about if the engines were replaced

I don't think many have had the engine replacement. Most that i have seen in here is just new oil pump. No one really knows for sure if the new oil pump won't break. However, we have not seen failures in many 2019 and up. If anything only a few. It seems that it was a batch of oil pumps that went into 2018s mostly.

Don't worry. I bet you will be fine. But while you are at it, you could add some cams if you want to mod the car. I bet other will pitch in soon. My car had it replaced and i haven't had any issues. It's been like 2k miles

That’s excellent news. I’m hoping Oil Pumps won’t be on back order either

Buy the Katech pump and have them install that.

I have a 2017 SS. Bought it used last year. Carfax showed it had the oil pump replaced at 10K miles. Car is now at 47K. Runs great, no problems.

Just have them replace it. The newer pumps are fine.

If you wanted the Katech installed your most likely going to have to bypass the warranty process.

Hopefully a clean break and no metal throughout. I will know more hopefully soon. The dealership said they don’t know much about this issue and have never seen one. I hope they don’t jerk me around. Is there an actual TSB out on this yet

Theres a TSB about it and the timing chain tensioner spring which could be the cause.

PIP5407A I believe is the TSB.

Well, if you had read my post, you would have noticed that I specifically pointed out that after the tech opened up my bottom end, he found only some scoring on 1 bearing. So, he replaced all of my main bearings and the oil pump.

No engine swap was necessary.

This was about 7000 miles ago. Car runs great.

I'd install it if I was closer. I don't get why they won't but every dealer is different I guess.
