Oil Change

I have a 2022 SS which I have owned for 6 months now. I have put only about 800 miles on it, I was wondering if an oil change/service has to be done for these Camaros every six months?

No, you don't need to change the oil after 6 months. One year is adequate if you're not depleting the oil life by driving.

BTW, drive the car! How do you drive only 800 miles in 6 months?

Your oil life monitor should tell you when it's needed. I'm told it takes into account time AND mileage.

Your first oil change should be covered by Chevy (Mine was), so I say go ahead and go in when you're comfortable (before the oil life monitor goes off). Some people will insist that the first oil change will pull out all the "metal shavings" that new engines may exhibit. You should be ok going all the way up to the what the oil change monitor says.

I am assuming this is a brand new car? You should change the oil after the first 500 miles to get all the break-in material out of the engine. After that, you will find someone arguing something different everywhere you look. I personally am one of the people that changes their oil once a year regardless of mileage. I do it myself so it is only $60-80 for the oil/filter and to me that is worth it just in case. Some people will argue you can go longer, but that is up to you.

Also, while you can just follow your oil life monitor in the car, I found it to be not so accurate. I just changed my oil last fall in November and the car has been sitting since for the winter. I recently just took it out for the spring and the oil life is already at 55%. I regularly hit 0% way before I change my oil. I get an oil analysis every time I change my oil and it always comes back good (in fact they always suggest I can go longer on the oil) so I know I am good.

So change the oil after the break-in period of 500 miles. Check. What about the transmission (A10) and diff? Normal interval for those? Car is not tracked.

That's what I did. Changed the oil the first time at 500 miles and before exceeding 4k rpm. I'm going to wait on the diff until at least the second oil change.

500 miles is the initial break-in where you want to be mindful of how you operate the car. After that, "just drive it."

The High Performance Supplement has guidance that is intended to apply for cars that WILL be tracked, but there's no harm in following it.

Oil change at 500 miles and again at 1500 miles.
Diff fluid change at 1500 miles.

My car will NEVER see a track, but I did the extra fluid and filter changes anyhow.

I'm in the same boat, but still planning to follow the guidance from the High Performance Supplement.

Manual says break in is for the first 1500 miles.

Since we're talking about oil changes, I'm curious about how all of it gets drained. I haven't done one on this car, or any other car for about 25 years, because I take mine to GM dealers and let them get dirty! So how do you know/how does all the oil get fully drained from the oil cooler etc? Seems like if the cooling system part just drains into the pan, it would do so everytime the car is turned off and the pan would be overfilled anytime the engine isn't running, no?

Simple answer - it doesn't all get drained. Fact of life with engines that not all of it will or CAN drain back to the pan. If it did, you'd have oil starvation at the furthest points from the pan during startup. You're getting "most" of it out and the amount left inside of the engine will get diluted by the new, clean oil to the point where it really isn't an issue.

Agree on the rear diff, but I would wait until around 5k and be sure and put the correct stuff back in, V6 and V8 take different fluid.
