Non RoF Road Repair Kit Complete!

I finally got everything together for my non RoF emergency tire repair kit!

Here are the details:

Jack: OEM GM from a Cobalt, G5, HHR, or Aura. Part #22731687 (stamped on the bottom of the base). 19mm lug wrench handle that comes with it is GM #9593599 (stamped inside the handle). You can buy both on GMPartsGiant, or scrounge a salvage yard for any of the above cars, or get the pair on eBay by searching the jack #. Pics below are my SS jacked up using this jack on a F & R pinch weld, and show the extension with a tire off the ground. I paid $64 on eBay for the set after no luck at two salvage yards (most of the jacks are long gone if the trunks are accessible. If the trunks are closed, good luck getting into them in a junkyard!)

Lug Wrench: The above 19mm won't fit the lugs, so I had to get another. GM part #22787726 (stamped inside the handle). 22mm foldable unit that fits the lugs snugly and won't bugger them up! Works way better than a 4-way. OEM on XT5's, Acadias, Enclaves, etc. It's the one laying next to the compressor in the pic.

Compressor: SuperFlow HV-40A2. This unit gets good reviews. Comes with coiled hose, screw-on fitting for valve stem, carry-bag (not shown in pic). Got one for $40 (shipping included), refurb unit, direct from SuperFlow website.

Generic plug kit from O'Reilly's.

If I have a shredding event, I guess I'm calling for roadside, but for the usual nail/screw, this'll do nicely!

I had to cut/trim a little of the forward well of the foam trunk insert for the jack/handle to fit, but otherwise everything stows nice and secure. There's two plastic retainers that hold the foam piece in, that unscrew with a Torx bit, in order to get it out to trim it. It's not real apparent they come out with a Torx bit unless you look real close with a flashlight.

Looks good. I would add a flashlight and pliers to remove what's is in the tire. Maybe some paper towels. I found a telescoping lug wrench on amazon which fits 4 sizes of lug nuts. Don't want to have all that fancy kit only to be stuck at breaking the lug nut!

I'm so not mechanically inclined

I forgot to add, the compressor has a built-in light on the end, so when you set it down you can aim it where you're working. Also forgot to add, I keep a leatherman tool in the glovebox. Also going to add a rag or two and maybe a pair of cheap work gloves!

Include some latex gloves like you use when you change the oil. The work gloves come in handy also.

I like the work glove idea - not sure if plastic/latex gloves would survive long. Since mine is a convertible and I always have a bottle of sunscreen handy, I also carry Wet Wipes to clean my hands up and remove sunscreen from the palms before driving. Something like those would be a good addition here for clean up, too.

These will not last long in a trunk that gets hot. They will snap apart when you need them!

Update on the compressor...

I bought the Superflow unit directly from them as a "refurb" for $40 inc shipping. It came USPS Priority, but had one foot/endcap broken, likely from the box being dropped just the wrong way. Emailed Superflow that it came damaged, and they shipped another to me with just a photo I sent showing the damage. And, they didn't want the other one back! It works fine, the foot is just broken off. They just told me to "dispose of it properly"! I give them an A+ for customer service!

Oh, and the unit works really well! It's got a long enough cig lighter cord to reach all 4 corners, plus a coiled hose that long enough to not have to struggle getting the unit close enough to the wheel to reach. Lastly, the valve fitting is screw-on type, not the quick-release type that never seats properly and leaks while you're trying to get the tire filled. When I tried it, my tire was at 35, and I filled it to 40 in about 30-40 seconds. This pump isn't going to run an impact wrench, but it seems to work great for tires!
