Thumbs down Long tube headers - barking noise on upshift

Hello everyone!

First post here, but I've been reading this forum for months now. Thanks for all the great info.

I just installed TSP 1-7/8 LT headers and MBRP axel back exhaust. I'm in the process of doing a remote tune, and I just flashed the base one, but I still need to data log and get it dialed in.

Its running pretty decent after the tune, but I'm noticing that on my upshifts there's a loud raspy barking noise, it doesn't sound very good. Is anyone aware of something I can do to fix this? Is there something that can be fixed in the tune? My car is 2018 1LE 1SS with an M6.

Thanks in advance for reading!!

My headers sounded way better after I added in the borla resonators. Really gets rid of the obnoxious rasp. Highly recommend.

I haven't even tried NLS, been taking it easy on her while I get the tune dialed in. It seems to be happening as low as 3k RPMs. It's most noticable when going from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. I'll try to get a video of it today.

It sounds like something simillar to Fast Path Torque Reduction (aka DSG farts) that a lot of automatic and rev-match manual Turbo 4 cylinder cars like the GTI and Veloster N have these days.

It kind of sounds like the exhaust might be hitting something. These engine mounts have been known to leak the fluid out too.

catless always tends to sound like shit. Put cats or a good resonator setup in

Yeah, I'm starting to wish I did the catted connection pipes instead of the off road pipes from TSP. Kinda bummed, b/c it doesn't look like they sell just the catted connection pipe I would need.

The shop I use showed me all the ruined aftermarket cats in a huge pile. I have always been one to only use catted headers, but they talked me out of it. You could always try some resonators like others have suggested. I have a set of 2" TSP headers and off road pipes waiting to go on. Sounds like the typical should have left it stock feeling coming on again........

Don’t feel bad about your purchase. Catted headers tend to sound better because they filter noise, but they can go bad especially if you plan on running tons of power. 1 7/8 inch headers without cats or mufflers just sound like that. They rasp pretty hard. 2” headers don’t do it nearly as much, but if you want it to go away, look into some resonators and a muffler to help buffer some of those unwanted frequencies. Stainless works legend series does a pretty good job at this. So does borla s line and AWE touring. Pretty much anything with a decent muffler.

I put this in:

https://www.magnaflow.com/products/1...rmance-muffler

I put it in place of the factory x pipe location on the NPP. There is a thread about it somewhere around here. I am still not satisfied, mainly because I want refined and more exotic and luxurious sound.

This muffler did take away the annoying and overly loud startup rasp, but at the same time took away the growl of the stock exhaust at idle and low throttle/low rpms. It also got rid of the obnoxious and over loudness at WOT, so now you can go WOT and not worry so much about 80 different people calling the cops on you.

I am wishing I did the Borla resonator like some other people were talking about, I am just not sure if that actually attenuates any sound at all. This magnaflow x-pipe muffler actually has fiber packing to attenuate sound.

I have since put my stock exhaust manifolds and both cats back on and sold my headers. I sold the headers because I can't stand the crappy broken POS ticking sounds. Although I can still hear them with the stock exhaust. Now the car kind of sounds like a old crappy van/work truck that the factory exhaust rusted off, so someone welded in their own pipe and put a cheap muffler from the auto parts store on haha.
