ZL1 Ram Air

I had the car apart recently and took a real close look at how the air gets from the front grill to the, in my case, Big gulp box, and frankly, it looks pretty haphazardly designed and built. So I've decided to buy a Velossa ram air intake, and make a few other minor changes to the air passageway to the BG inlet to route true high-speed cold air rather than air bouncing off the radiator.

The ram air business is huge and it wasn't until recently that this occurred to me as needed for this car

I installed one on my car... it definitely made a huge difference in how quickly my IATs drop after sitting still idling anywhere. After installation, my IATs are generally the same as outside air temp.

I believe what got me thinking about air was taking a close look at the Garage 56 LeMans ZL1; air ducts make up at least half of the entire underhood area

That car also raced for 24 hours straight.

Another thing that got my attention was the poor seal at the Big Gulp perimeter , which had to result in hot engine compartment air being drawn in. I've sealed it which means more air from the grille.

While I have no data to back up my claim, I do believe you get MOST of the benefits of the Velossa Ram Air intake by just removing the rain/snow blocker behind the upper grill and driver's side headlight.

Like the Velossa, it provides a more direct path to the air box. It just doesn't funnel the air as efficiently as the Velossa.

It seems with the rain/snow blocker removed, the engine builds boost a little faster (not more boost) which gives the car a subtle but noticeable extra grunt at lower RPMs. As the OP stated, IATs drop quicker from a traffic stop.

As I said, I have no data to back these claims. They're strictly observational from having the rain/snow block removed for the past 3-4 years.

If you're not planning to drive your car in a blizzard or hurricane it's well worth removing in my opinion.

In trying to route more air from the grille to the intake area, I'm embarrassed to say I had not thought of this great idea. Have you seen a video on its removal? I never drive the car in the rain, snow, night, etc.

I did this a while ago with my ss. You can pull your bumper or pull off the radiator shield. If you remove shield, you have to remove the hood latch on the car so make sure to mark its position.
