Does GM Certified free oil change get you synthetic?

My 2011 SS is GM Certified so I get free oil changes. It's been brought to my attention that since synthetic is not required the dealer will not be giving me synthetic? Just some sort of Dexos approved oil?

I thought he was wrong so I looked in the manual to see if synthetic was required and it is not. All it mentions about synthetic is this...

From the manual:

Specification When dexos™ Oil
Not Available (V8 Engine)
This vehicle's engine requires a
special oil meeting GM Standard
GM4718M. Oils meeting this
standard may be identified as
synthetic. However, not all synthetic
oils will meet this GM standard.
Use only an oil that meets GM
Standard GM4718M.

You'll get a Dexos blend. And will charge you a bit more to go full synthetic as an upgrade. What happened to be for my 2 year free oil changes, I just upgrade till I am done my 2 years then I am doing it myself again.

My dealership would only use regular oil for my free maintenance oil changes. Because synthetic is not required for my V6.

But you have a V8 there is no reason for them to not use synthetic.

I've read and heard all the arguments about modern petroleum oil being sufficient, and how most synthetics are still Pet-based, but it just makes sense to go with the best in a hi-perf car like ours. I go back to the early 80's with Amsoil. Awesome product, as is most quality synthetics. (Which are now much easier to come by than Amsoil)

Just make sure to check the work order that it states 8 quarts and more importantly, the dipstick. It is not uncommon for the dealer to put only 6 quarts on a V8.

i'd ask if I could bring my own and have them supply the labor, usually get mine at Walmart when it is on sale and do the change come fall, would not put anything in mine that is not full synthetic

There is an upcharge for synthetic at my dealer. So now I just change it myself. In the long run, it's much quicker. No waiting and I know it's done right. The Camaro SS is one of the easiest cars to change the oil that I have ever owned.

A part synthetic blend is required by the V6, Dexos blend is part synthetic.

I specifically request full synthetic. First time they said I might have to pay the difference, which I told them I would pay. Then came back and said there was no upcharge.

On my 2010 SS the filler cap specifically called for Mobil1 5W-30. Pretty sure the 11s and maybe the 12s did as well. Don't see how they can justify putting anything else in. My '13 ZL1 only says Dexos on the cap. On my first oil change (free), the tech told me he would put Mobil1 in it anyway because he knew that's what I preferred. Beyond that, they always let me provide my own oil and filter and charge me $10 to change it.
