Help! Engine blew at 45000 - Found other cases as well. - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

Hey All,

I am in need of some serious help. My engine on my 2012 2LT just blew at 45000. The diagnosis was a low end failure, but they did not take all apart to see if it was the crank, rods, or bearings. The dealer is saying it blew due to low oil so I am not covered, but I check my gauges every morning and there was nothing unusual that day.That car had just started making a clunking noise.

Also, a quick google search for "LFX clunking noise" or something similar revealed a bunch of other cases of engines blowing as early as 2500 miles. There appears to be issues with the crank bearings on these.

As of right now the options I was given was to pay $9k for a rebuild or tow it home. Any suggestions?

File a case with GM and get them involved or go to another dealer.

Low oil huh?

If you have records supporting regular oil changes, contact Chevy Customer Service and start the warranty escalation process. The point is that if you can support the fact that you followed proper oil maintenance protocol then the the low oil condition itself would be a warrantied repair, thus the bearing failure would be as well.

Did you check the oil dip stick regularly? Need to do more than just look at the gauges, if your really getting on it, it will use more oil at higher rpm's. Need to keep her full.

There are many threads associated with the oil pumps failing. Mine just did. GM put a PI (product information) out on it where the pressure relief valve sticks, not allowing any oil pressure. The stock oil pumps should be replaced; and many use the Melling oil pump. Covered under 5yr/100,000 mile warranty (but GM would use stock parts). Not sure if this applies to you.

No warranty for me. But I doubt I have the damage you do, I turned my engine off immediately and did not drive it.

Was your Dealer wearing a hat shaped like a Buttocks at the time? Of course your to blame.... open a case with gm, and find a good dealer or other shop that think they can get it covered under your 50/50 if its supposed to be. Opinions are like:

Unless a rod pocked its head through the pan or block whatever oil was in there is still in there, easy enough to varify.

My V6 blew on my 2011 1LT it had 63,000 miles on it at the time. GM swapped it out, it took a month, but they covered everything.

They wanted to see all of my oil change receipts, which i had all of them. Basically the car "ran out" of oil 4000 miles after the last oil change. They could not explain it, neither could I. If I would of had to pay for it the bill would of been around $8000.00

The fact they are not covering it seems weird, if you have proof of all your oil changes I would call another dealer. I used Spencer Chevy in Springfield, Pa. I know most people complain about dealers, but these guys are awesome.

Now i'm worried. Knock on wood no issues or indications thus far but I bought 4-5 oil changes worth of oil and filters from autozone when they had a good sale on it months ago. I change the oil very 7500 or so miles or when the indicator reaches 20-25%. How can I keep an accurate record of oil changes to prove they were done properly if i bought all the stuff in one shot?

Not sure what is required, but what I do is write the date, oil and filter used, miles right in the OM Manual.

changing your oil when your supposed to isn't the same as regularly checking the oil level. not sure why some of you think simply doing the change when your supposed to (about every 7500 miles) will convince GM that you checked the oil regularly. I don't believe anywhere in the manual it says you don't have to check the oil level between changes.

There is no gauge in the car that show you oil level. The only way to check it is by the dip stick and that should be done regularly. I check mine at every fill-up.
