I traded a Chevy both times and even including the roundtrip drive on 2200 miles,I came out much better than trading with any of 5 dealers within 50 miles of me. Just a thought.
My wife’s uncle worked for the local dealer for years and is still their official grill master. All in all the family has bought at least dozen vehicles there, including my wife’s current car. As for me, well I married in so they’ll have to earn my business, but I’ll give them first shot at getting me the car I want. I’m with you though, I look nationwide for the car with the color and options I want and keep one of the car shipping estimators open in another tab.

Ordered mine earlier this year after coming to the conclusion I wouldn't find exactly what I wanted on a dealer lot. I did a little research on pricing so I could walk in and offer a price that would make me happy and not be unreasonable to the dealer. Not sure how true any of what I read was true but I ended up satisfied with the price:

For GM vehicles, I read dealers typically get a car for 6-7% under MSRP so I split the difference and figured 6.5%. Did the math for base price and options and added destination and GG tax...dealer can't do much about those so no deduction there. Also, not sure if dealer holdback is a real thing or not but I guessed it was so I deducted most of it in my final price.

First dealer apparently didn't take me serious as they said they had to wait for their manager to return in a couple days before they could negotiate...they never called me back...not that it would've made a difference because the dealer I went to immediately after them is where I ordered from. Walked in, told them what I wanted, they built it on workbench, told me the MSRP (which I already knew) and then I told them what I was willing to pay. Took him about 5 mins of conversation with someone but he came back and said he could actually go about $500 less...I then asked how much they required for a deposit. $500 later and the car was ordered the next workday.

All said, after using a couple grand on GM card points at $8k under sticker. So you can absolutely haggle on price for an ordered vehicle. I should note, I was eligible for the supplier discount as well so I'm sure that helped a little.
