You definitely have a case. $$$$. These transmissions are phenomenal. Just like with anything else a small percentage of the transmissions will be bad.

Stopped in to get an update. My car was on the lift with the transmission pan (among other parts/valve body?) removed. He was nice enough to show me what was going on and explain the situation. Long story short, the new 10 speed has a gear on gear design for the transmission pump vs. gear to chain on the A8. The gear on the pump side has play in it causing the noise. He rotated it back and forth and I could hear the noise clear as day. He said GM doesn’t even know what to do about it. They want to pull apart another A10 to compare. The wait continues...

Negative. My car does not make any noise. I do not think (1) ZL owner here would agree with GM A10 position. Time for a Lemon Buyback. Lawyer time!! Dealership seems on top of it though.

That’s what I was thinking. Wouldn’t that be funny. Bring a specialist in and find a cracked flexplate

It’s been 5 days since my last update. Went back to the dealer yesterday to try to get some more information and a status update. The service advisor went to the shop to see what was going on. He couldn’t find the technician, but my car was still on the lift with the transmission pan re-installed. The last time I spoke with GM, they were taking a front pump off of a 2019 Tahoe to see if it had the same noise. The dealer and GM are still trying to say they don’t even know if there is anything wrong. I told them I haven’t heard of a single other person hearing this noise. If you guys could listen carefully next time you have your A10’s out and report back, I would greatly appreciate it.

The only rattle type noise I’ve heard is one that I’ve been able to reproduce by power braking to load the drivetrain and switching between drive and reverse. Mine has also always made a gear whine type noise since new. I was trying to diagnose that when I noticed the rattle. I’ve never heard it during normal driving though.

I checked 2 other brand new A10 cars, and they both made the same whine noise. Pretty sure it’s that gear to gear pump. They also made the rattle sound when loading them between drive and reverse like my car. I might have some video I can post. Though my conclusion was that my car is 100% normal.

Here’s the video I have. This isn’t my car, but another new car on the lot at my dealer. You can hear both the whine I mentioned, and the sort of rattle when loaded. Sorry it’s not the best quality. There was a lot of traffic and ambient noise nearby.

I had a “gear whine” as well but the idler pulley and tensioner pulley were bad. When those were replaced I had no sort of driveline noise. I haven’t had the issue with switching between drive and reverse.

My issue is definitely different than this video. My rattle is coming when unloadeing the driveline, ie cruising to a stop. I have a metal on metal tapping sound. The technician recreated it by wiggling the front pump gear back and forth. The debate is whether or not this is normal and other transmissions do it. My belief is that it’s not normal, seeing as how it never did it up until about 8,500 miles.

Man I hate saying this but you may have to turn into THAT customer.
May have to turn into the nightmare customer and lawyer up. Let’s just see what they say first. But I definitely would be worried. Hope this works out.

I know man. I told the service advisor yesterday, “I’m sorry for being a PITA, but this is getting ridiculous “ I’m not going to disclose any legal information, but steps have already been taken. I know people are just doing a job and I try not to be rude or make their jobs harder, but c’mon...a service advisor that doesn’t even know the status or plan??

They said there is a specialist for the A10 that has to authorize any work/parts for the transmission and it’s a one to two week wait before he can even look at it. Dealer says they don’t think it’s anything major, but it’s a little concerning. Searched the forum and can’t seem to find similar problems. Any ideas on what the noise could be?
Congratulations, you are well on your way to leverage your local lemon law.

Noises are super subjective, which is why I have to deal with ‘normal’ noise complaints all the time. What’s horrible to one person often isn’t even noticed by another. My first go to (whether personally or for work) is to test another car. All 3 2018 ZL1s I checked made the whine. It’s subtle, but there. It was there on my car the day I took delivery. It’s definitely in the transmission.

The rattle I mentioned you really have to try to reproduce. I only noticed it screwing around with my car and the other 2.

But yeah, yours sounds like something different — or at least more severe.

Day 24: After multiple calls to GM and causing my service advisor to pull his hair out, GM has finally acknowledged a problem. Enough so, that they have redesigned the transmission pump gears. They are shipping a new pump/gears and my car will finally get worked on. If you have the A10, keep an ear out for any noises. I’d be willing to bet they are coming.
