North Carolina Inpection Question

Hey guys, so I have an inspection question for the state of North Carolina. I want to put an exhaust on my car but I don't know how strict the state is, being reletively new here. Can anyone point me into a direction on how far I can go and still pass a state inspection?

I don't know of any regulations other than it has to have mufflers and cats in the same locations as the factory. No leaks in the system. Most inspectors don't really look unless they hear something suspicious. I've been a service advisor/manager for 20 years.

NC will fail for any current or stored codes. I had a heavily modified G8 and had the O2 sensors turned off so I would not get codes. Car was loud but never had an issue getting thru inspection.

The inspectors never lifted my car either but since I had high flow cats I was not worried. If you get an inspector that will lift your car you want to at least make sure you have something that looks like cats even if they are hollowed out.

Ive passed two years with mine. Straight downpipe, full exhaust. Its loud. They dont do smog/emissions its just a visual of check engine light, any leaks, window tint, lights kind of thing.

I’d like to bring this back to life…

I’m new to North Carolina too and also in the Charlotte area. Since they don’t check emissions (stated above) do they do a visual inspection under the hood to see if anything has been modified from stock?

Where I’m going with this is that my long-term plans involve a cam, CAI, intake, etc. I’m at a point in life where I don’t want to deal with “unmoding” things just to go through an inspection. If I go in there and my car is cam chopping like crazy and has clearly had some modifications done, is that reason to fail? Sorry for my ignorance but I’m originally from the West coast were a visual inspection can be reason to fail.

On my last 5th gen Camaro SS, I had a roto-fab cai, long-tube headers, hi-flow cats, cat-back system, and turned off reporting on the O2 sensors in my tune, so it wouldn't throw any CEL's. Always passed without any issues.
