So 300 degree oil in the pan while the coolant is 212 does not make sense to me. That's 10 qts of oil at 300 deg!
Maybe because there are 3 coolers for the water it's able to disscipate a lot of heat, more so than the oil cooler. If you think about it, if the oil pump stopped pumping, the oil in the engine would be much hotter than at the sensor location (near the pan). Amazing that the water coolers could keep things in check at 212F. I checked previous sessions from last summer at VIR and my water was getting up to 217F. Probably helps that that the ambient air last weekend was in the mid 40s.

Thanks all for your responses thus far.

The dealership is currently tearing down the engine and says they hope to have an answer on cause and extent of damage by end of day tomorrow. I'll keep you posted as to what I learn and what the resolution is going to be.

I am sorry for your car. I am following because it's a new, 2021 car and I am surprised that the oil pump failed...

Sorry about your car, and would deffinatley see if it were the broken valve spring issue. Good luck with whatever happens.

Sorry to hear about the engine. Which dealership did you take it to?

This is terrible and disheartening to see if it’s a oil pump on a new car. Really not acceptable on such a new car. I know all mechanical parts will fail at some point but not this new. Good luck and keep us posted.

let's wait for the analysis.
I'm not sure how the oil got to 300. from what I can see, the temp sensor measures oil as it comes out of the pan. There's a lot of oil in there. Since pressure dropped and temp was high I'm wondering if oil pan pickup could get dislodged so that pump was only pulling oil from the top of the reservoir. I just can't see all 10 qts of oil getting that hot over a partial track run.

It will be interesting to see what the autopsy reveals. I don't think it's the oil pump. I believe if the pump failed, the engine would have welded itself together before the oil temp reached 300

You're good on the oil type and viscosity... I would be surprised if they rebuild it. Hope the dealer does a good job for you, keep us posted for sure.

OP, my 2018 ZL1 had an oil pump failure a year ago. Hendrick in Cary tore it down and found minimal scoring on 2 bearings in the engine and a broken pump. They replaced the oil pump and all main bearings to the crankshaft under warranty.

So, in my case, engine replacement was not necessary. Took about a week start to finish. But, with today's supply issues, no telling how long it will take them to get parts.

For me, that was 1 year and 7000 miles ago. No problems with the car since.

Hey Steve, glad to hear Hendrick did you right. Guessing OP's car is there since he's in Cary. I work right down the road from them so when my oil pump goes out on July 21st (day after warranty expires), I plan on taking it there.

Yep, you are correct - took it to Hendrick in Cary

The latest update is that there is "extensive engine damage." They are still tearing it down, but the unofficial expectation from the service tech is that enough stuff is probably broken that the decision will be to replace the engine. Apparently Chevy requires them to catalogue the busted parts and calculate the cost for replacement parts plus labor. If that value exceeds the "new engine" cost, then they just put in a new engine.

So the hope now is that they finish the tear-down and calculations by Monday, then submit for new engine approval from Chevy. Whenever approval is granted, it's ~ 10 days (under normal circumstances-who knows though in today's crazy environment) thereafter to receive and install new engine.

Wow. Bad luck. I hope it all works out for you and you get a new engine.
