Who has had surgery for a torn rotator cuff ?

So i have a torn rotator cuff and really dont want surgery, but cant imagine going through the rest of my life feeling like i do. I heard that even if you have surgery you will feel better for short term then it just starts all over again. Those that have had this surgery will you please share you experience. Thanks

I had partially torn rotators cuff about 2 years ago. I had it for about a about 11/2 years. I was going to physical therapy at that time. I finally went and seen a specialist. He took a cat scan nd said that I bone spurs and partially torn rotator cuff. He did some more physical therapy. That did not help so he recommended surgery. He told since it happen long and my age it may not be 100% but he did say there should be no pain when done. I had the surgery done. Their was only 3 small cuts on my shoulder. After about 6 weeks when I was bale to move my arm there are no pain but my arm movement is 95% of normal.
I am glad the i had the surgery done. I now can raise and bend my arm with no pain

I had it about three years ago. For me the first three weeks of recovery sucked. I hate general anesthesia. Every now and then if I lift something or twist my arm a certain way it will hurt. Usually briefly and always unexpected. I would not have wanted to leave it like that though. Good luck and I hope you recover quickly

Just do it, I've had both shoulders done and each time after I healed up I wished I had done it sooner. It just gets worse ans soon you can't open the car door or get a dish out of the cupboard. I sat in a recliner for close to a year with a ice bag because of work commitment, I can throw a ball again now. Good luck, get some referrals, now a day, they pressurize your shoulder area with saline, look at everything with a scope and decide what really needs to be done before they start.

I had mine done in 2004, and I tried everything before the surgery, shots, PT and when I could not take not being able to sleep or even reach out to touch the dash in my car and it was time and never regretted it. Now I feel how messed up my other one is from working construction and working out for 30+ years. Get it done and yes it definitely sucks for a couple of months but I had just the 3 spot entry also and 10 years and counting.

I have had my left cuff fixed for a full thickness tear and it is 100% . I now have 2 full tears on right cuff and plan to have repaired asap. Do your research get the best surgeon to repair it. Experence counts.

Full thickness tear of my right superspinatus. I'm 30 years old.

Had surgery May 1st 2014. Back working full duty as a LEO October 1st 2014.

Get an ice machine, they type that pumps the ice water thru it, helps a lot. sleeping sucks for a month or two, but the months go by quickly. 4-6 weeks post op you can get rid of the big pillow under the sling, another few weeks and you can use the sling when needed. Youre arm wont move much for the first few months, but once it starts movin, progress starts coming quick.

I torn mine in Sept 2013 but going thru workmans comp sucks. I was actually able to lift weights a couple months after I got hurt and really got my shoulder strong pre surgery. I think that helped the first month since the RC had some support around it.

Be patient, get massages when you can, and you'll be back in no time. Dr Prickett in AZ is very well known around here for being a badass shoulder surgeon. Find a good Doc.

good luck

Had both of mine done, 1 tear and the other was a complete rupture. Got 5 screws in my right shoulder, have no problems. The cold water ice pack is a wonder, great invention. Still play golf.

Do it. The recovery sucks, but its wortht it in the long run. I injured my shoulder the first time when I was 15 and every few years would reinjure it the same way due to lack of stability from the first injury.
I got to where I couldn't do my job from the pain, I'm a Helicopter Mechanic, and finally got the surgery.
10 years and going with no further injuries. I lost a little strength and some range of motion, but I don't live with a daily pain in my shoulder and constant popping and grinding anymore.

Same with me suffered for about a year and finally told them to cut me open. They found bone spur about 20 mm long that never showed up on MRI or xrays. They said they would have found it when it would have cut completely through rotator cuff.

I was about 55 yrs old. This was 10 years ago and no problems, 100% movement back but took about a year for it to come back. Glad I got fed up and told them to operate. You will have plenty more aches and pains, get them fixed. I am now dealing with lower back pain which has far less success rates through surgery.

8 mm tear right side dominant hand rotator cuff. Lived with the pain for 5 years. Had surgery April 2004. With a 3.5 month recovery. Still top notch.

Success depends on surgeon..type of tear...and chill axing afterwards.

Best bet is to find a sports orientated surgeon. Dr. William Athens at Henry Ford did mine. No issues whatsoever..

I have had rotator cuff surgery a year and a half back. Surgery was my last option but as PT didn't help me recover I had to go through the surgery. I was really scared about it but my doctor at osaliortho was the most acclaimed orthopedic surgeon long island and was very supportive and convinced me that it will be over in a blink. I have recovered well after the surgery. But if you don't want to go for surgery, first try physical therapy. If it doesn't workout then go for surgery. Although surgery has long term benefits it is seen maximum times that most patients don't need surgery.
