New 2SS Owner - Mistake?

Hey all,

I’m a new owner of a black on black 2024 2SS 1LE with BCD brakes and A10 transmission. I am coming from a 2021 Toyota Supra that was tuned and modified for the track. I do 15-20 track days a year and some Gridlife time attack events. Usually fastest in my HPDE groups.

My question is.. I feel like I made a mistake getting a 2SS with a sunroof. I wasn't aware of the differences between the sunroof VS non sunroof version until AFTER I got it (and I stupidly overlooked the sunroof when purchasing the car at night). Does anyone have data on how much faster a non sunroof equipped SS 1LE might be? I heard the reverse-mohawk roof adds downforce.

Also, I may be overreacting and the difference may not be noticeable at all and I’m just crazy lol.

I'm sure it's not significant, you're just getting the penalty of a heavier car.

The bigger concern may be how well you fit with a helmet on.

Cool, I can live with the weight difference since there’s ways to reduce weight. And from my research, the auto and sunroof add around 25-50 lbs (all sources I saw had different weights). My bigger concern was aerodynamic differences of the roof line.

I’m 5’8” so no issue with a helmet, I fit fine thankfully lol.

I plan on adding a big wing and possibly custom front splitter with canards and going to 18” wheels from BC forged since I got confirmation from them they’ll clear the BCD brakes.

Unless you drive professionally, with race cars, you're not going to notice 25-50 pounds of weight. Statistically, the time delta is negligible.

The weight difference between the 2 is going to be very minor. The bigger "issue" is the amount of headroom you lose with a sunroof vs a hard top.

Why did you get rid of your tuned and track ready Supra? Was there anything you didn’t like about it?

Where did you read that non sunroof adds downforce? That's a new one for me

Not really other than heat soak and dealing with cooling. It's one of the best track cars I have had. Easy to drive, lots of power, pretty good on consumables when tracking it, mod friendly, and reliable.

I honestly just wanted a change and a car that I didn't have to modify for better cooling on track. Never owned a V8 and wanted to experience it.

I'll see if I can link to the article. I believe it mentioned something about the GT4.R car having it as well because for better aerodynamics.

yup my buddy made that mistake on his old cobalt ss but hes a tiny guy

more weight and he broke his sunroof a few times from going around corners not sure if the lateral g load disrupted the tracks or what but i always order my "track " cars with no sunroof on purpose and im only 6" ft tall

Ive had a 1ss 1le no sun roof and a 2ss 1le sunroof and tracked both cars. Theres no difference in weight or drag that you will notice. Times were the same as well. The only difference was head room.

I have a 2SS 1LE with a sunroof and do track days with it. I'm 5'-8" and my helmet does touch the roof in my normal seating position. Adjusting the seat a bit made it OK.

That’s disappointing. I should try sitting in it with my helmet tomorrow. In my normal seating position, I have about the width of my fist between my head and roof.

How do you enjoy tracking yours?
